Exposed Oil Cooler

Hey everyone ,

This is a more of a precautionary post. If anyone hasn't been under their M240 yet then I would like to make everyone aware that once again BMW is pushing out vehicles with exposed oil coolers underneath the car.

Turner Motorsport makes a skid plate for the G20 that should fit but still we shouldn't have to spend money immediately to protect our vehicles.

So just be cautions with debris on the motorways.

Best,

Conrad.

Yes, I noticed this. Very poor design. A parking block or road debris will knock that out. I have the cooling and performance tire package and was wondering if this is only for that package or all vehicles. I sure hope someone makes something to protect this.

Was wondering this myself.

This was mentioned on the 3 series forums back when the G20 was new. I believe there are some aftermarket companies that make a shield for this extra cooler/radiator.

And I believe this is only present with the Cooling package. At least it is on the 3er

Turner Motorsport makes a skid plate that's around $600

It's for the M340. I would order and test fit but I'm in Germany and the shipping for the box that would fit that would probably cost 3 of my limbs.

I wonder how hard it would be to remove. I bought the package for only the wheels and brakes, so if I can remove that cooler easily, I may do it.

The tires are 1200€ on it's on which is half the price of the package. They are a 4 compound tire vs the standard PS4S.

I'll include a link to a video where it describes.

The difference between these brakes and the M Performance is the discs. M Performance you get dimpled/slotted.

Imo yes it's quite annoying but the tires and the brakes alone are worth it. I couldn't imagine getting the standard 348mm F disc on a 3800lb car.

I've most definitely learned something new. Good video.

Yeah, initially I wasn't going to add the package for only the wheels. When I learned about the larger brake setup, I added it immediately.

I only have 200 miles, but the brakes are very touchy, grabby, and stop so good i worry about someone rear ending me. Can't wait for a track day as well as the end of the break in period. I have read people complaining about their brakes, wonder if they have the cooling and tire package. Well worth the package as well as Michelin tires.

I think the complaints come from non-ZTK package drivers. With how heavy this car is, it should come with the larger brakes as a standard option

Does paying for the Red brake callipers mean we get the bigger brakes in Canada & US?

No, that is only the color of whichever brakes you get, and it's a free option if I recall correctly. You need to get the high performance tire and cooling package for the upgraded brakes

The brake upgrade isn't documented, so there's some assumptions being made based on visual differences. I've been asking owners of both trims to take pics/ measurements, but I've had no takers. I'll for sure do this when I take delivery.

That's unfortunate there's no clarity on the BMW build page.

One of the reasons I got rid of the M2c and F80 M3 was the constant fear of driving with oil cooler so low to the ground. Especially on the F80 as it wasn't a lease yet I loved driving the rwd in winters here.

Have no desire to get the m240i with the oil cooler again in that same location for peace of mind.

I hear you, but at the same time, your front bumper will pretty much get annihilated in the process of destroying the oil cooler. I've never ran over something in my 24 years of driving that would cause an impact to that area specifically. Approach curbs with caution when parking.

In the event you do impact something, know to turn the car off immediately

Anybody figure anything out for this?

I'm mostly concerned about rocks and ice chunks. I'm thinking if anything I can rig up some mesh over it rather than buy a $600 skid plate that may or may not fit.

I have contacted Turner Motorsports and they told me they are working on it and stay tuned. I have been looking myself and have not found anything to date.

I have a M240i and my underneath is protected. I am assuming this is only on the M sport pro cars with 33T package.

The standard M-sport 348MM are very good combined with my P-zero summer tires even with highly spirited driving. If you are going to track the car more than 1x a year, then go bigger to dissipate additional heat.

ZTK gets you larger rotors and calipers, but still smaller than M-Performance. Here is what my research is indicating. The brake piston size and quantity is the same, in essentially a larger caliper to accommodate the larger rotor to dissipate more heat in track use.

Brembo Front - 4x40-44/348/36 (Standard M-Sport)
Brembo Front - 4x40-44/374/36 (Assume ZTK)
Brembo Front - 4x40-44/395/36 (Assume M-Performance)

My thoughts are that you should not think you are getting inadequate brakes with the base M-sport, and outside of heat load and I'm not sure you are getting a shorter emergency braking distance with the ZTK.

The wider front tires will help with braking for sure and ZTK is the only way to get them from the factory.
