I see 2017/2018 M240i's currently listed for ~$30k with 70k+ miles. The G42's will certainly be worth more than that given inflation, the shift toward electric, and the performance it offers.
I wouldn't completely bank on that being the case. As the market continues to adjust back to reality I think these will as well. I do agree they may be worth more than the average used car given they are a little rarer but I do not see these having a 30K+ price tag in 5 years especially with high miles. Bey hey, if you are right and I am wrong I'll be happy.

Word is used car prices are on the upswing (again). Seems with new car prices up this has car shoppers considering and buying used and this demand is causing used prices to go up.

Lol. It’s a car. They’re depreciating assets. They’re meant to be used and reasonably abused. If you care that much about your money, go invest in gold and drive around in a 25 year old Craigslist Corolla.

I TOLD

I have told my kids for years that it cost money to own cars. Not just payments and fuel and maintenance. The car cost you in depreciation with every mile you drive.
BMWs cost you a bit more money.

This is a pointless exercise. No one has a crystal ball. Drive the car and enjoy it. If you can’t afford the depreciation you can’t afford the car. Get something else.

99% of cars are rapidly depreciating assets, obviously at different rates.

We are in an interesting time now though, when legislation and consumer demand is pushing aggressively towards EV's. On the other hand, this makes the last released modern ICE options more desirable for the niche group very reluctant to go the EV route (enthusiasts like us on a BMW ICE sub-forum).

I would also be concerned with the tech / iDrive8. Cars in this age are almost feeling like phones in which their software only gets so many years of updates (understandably). Thus after a while it could be garbage (and there wouldn't be aftermarket options like a floating screen from a double din, etc.). This is a stark contrast to a much more analogue sports car (some might just go that route instead for a weekender and have an EV as their daily).

I do think the B58 reliability and MPG efficiency are strong selling points too. Gas will only get more expensive, people still with ICE will want something that can not only run mid 12's but also get 35mpg + on the highway.

It churns my stomach to think that I could pay 54k MSRP for a car to be worth 30k in 2 years. It would be my one and only car in the garage for a single 29 yr old homeowner. Thoughts?
Today's economy (crazy inflation) is almost unprecedented and will not last. Cars are expense not investments, and unless you buy something super exotic and rare and never drive it they all depreciate. You know if you can afford it or not. Life is short to drive boring cars.

If you want to minimize depreciation, go with a lightly-optioned M2. More upfront money, less depreciation, lower total cost of ownership.

If he's worried about losing money from depreciation I'm assuming he doesn't have the ability (or financial desire) to buy a much more expensive car. Lower total cost of ownership? How so? Less depreciation cannot be said for sure at this point in time.

OP - maybe a gently used M240 that already took the depreciation hit would be ideal.

F87 owners paid much less than F22 owners to drive their cars. Ironically, 228i/230i owners had the highest TCO of all last-Gen 2-Series owners.

Buying the cheaper car to save money isn’t the correct play with lower end BMWs. You’ll always do better buying full M cars. That’s true for every generation since the E30.

You can hate depreciation and have the money to buy the high end stuff. The car’s price is a liquidity thing; depreciation is the actual cost.

A 230i owner will definitely pay more to own it for 2 years than a G87 owner will. If supply is constrained, the G87 owner might even get paid to drive.

I am a little amused that we're still discussing this topic, especially since the OP hasn't even responded once, and it seems that everyone else is in agreement on the fact that you shouldn't buy a new car (esp. a luxury one) if you're worried about its depreciation.
