[Brooklyn M240i]

Did anyone who picked up a new 2023 M240i follow the break-in period instructions in the manual? We're you advised my the dealership to follow them? Also, I've heard BMW dealers tell people they don't need a break-in service, but many people on here have recommended it. Is it worth talking to my dealer to arrange that?

I have a 22, and my CA said to be gentle for the first 1200, which aligns with what the manual says.

Break in service is an owners choice and not listed as a recommendation by BMW.

I never do the break in thing. I also do not believe it makes a huge difference.

If I were very close to the 100 mph/160kmph ( I believe I was max 97-98 mph/ 157-158 kmph) and 4500 rpm( I believe I was max 4200-4300 rpm) limits for break in manual instructions for around maybe 4-5 times during my last 870 miles/1400 km since picking up the car while 99% of time driving in eco pro mode, might have just affected the longevity and efficiency of my engine in a negative way or I am totally fine ?

this was only for short amounts of time and of course by not doing a full throttle or kickdown action like the manual says we should avoid at all costs.

so you would assume your dealer has more/better info than the BMW engineers?

read the freakin manual, then make up yer own mind.

Or follow the posts and you will have roughly 50 percent say follow the procedure, 50 percent say don't bother. That should help. It's really no biggie to follow the recommended procedure for the first few miles, if you don't want to do that...don't.

I followed break-in. Maybe went to 5000 rpm once in the 1200 miles. Got oil changed at 3000 miles or so.

full fat M cars have break in service at 2000 km I believe.
My advisor told me I didn't need to break in my B58 but I did exactly what the manual said, which is "don't go full throttle for 2500km" or something like that, i don't think it mentions anything about RPM ranges, just not to depress the gas pedal all the way IIRC. Will you notice a difference, probably not.

Really is a personal choice. Do not know how not following recommendations would impact warranty as it seems the computers record lots of data.

Also, new to this quality of car, so I may be more cautious than others here with much more experience.

The manual DOES reference RPM limits, (not to exceed 4500 rpm first 1200 miles), and yes dealers will tell ya what you want to hear. One sales rep i contacted had no idea the M240 was built in Mexico....and I'm gonna rely on him for tech advice???

Out of all the CA and dealerships I've talked to (while looking for allocation) only one knew that they're built in Mexico (he's the one I bought the car from). Ironically - the dealership BMW Genius (not the lead one though) also thought they're built in Germany.

No way BMW or any mass produced car brand would void a warranty over not following break in period. Unless it was stated somewhere.

Plus lets be honest here most people do not follow it. All those people buying random 3 series or SUVs do not follow it. We know by know if people were having warranty problems.

So your telling me I can go test driving a few brand new BMWs on the lot and screw over people`s warranty? not a chance

I do believe most M cars have a 1200 mile break in. I have not heard of M lite models having that.

The service is an oil change and to swap out the rear diff fluid.

Followed the manual break-in requirements.
Did the OIL/Filter change at 1000km through my BMW dealer and had to pay.
Got an oil sample with filter and NIL shavings. So personal choice.
I wouldn't recommend oil/filter change other than what the manual recommends.

We picked up our car on Friday afternoon and did a small road trip to a neighbouring province for a mini vacation so we decided to follow the break in procedure in the manual. Even at that we haven't been wanting for power yet and it's still been a ton of fun to drive. We're nearly at 2000km mark already which was the hope - can't wait to uncork it!

Have never really followed the break in procedure on our other vehicles, just thought it wouldn't hurt to take it easy for a week.

Multiple people have posted that they've done analysis on their oil after the "break-in" period and there's been nothing to suggest you need an oil change that early.

If you want to do it for your own peace of mind, go ahead but it's certainly not necessary.

I am new to this quality of car as well. I am going from a 2014 Sentra SR (130HP) to a 23 G42. A little step up..haha Midlife crisis or do it now...before I can't easily get in and out of a sports car. The few of us that are new to these types of cars are just super excited and want to treat our new awesome pieces of technology as best we can. That being said "I" plan to follow the manuals suggestions. BUT am considering an early oil change paid for myself. Question I have is...will the dealer do an early out of pocket oil change without affecting the provided oil change schedule from BMW. Should get delivery early next week!

Haven't read all the posts so maybe I'm repeating some stuff...

I followed the break in guidelines for my 230i. Likewise for my 2020 Challenger. My 2020 M-B van. My 2018 Hellcat, and so on all the way back to my first new car and before that with my new motorcycles.

Also, as is my habit I change/have changed the oil/filter early -- unless prohibited by the manual.

A pic of the oil filter housing oil from my 2008 Cayman S is below.

As one can see it is loaded with "shavings". At 750 miles from new.

Yeah, the filter catches these bits of metal but my concern is the filter getting so "dirty" a pressure bypass valve opens and routes unfiltered oil to the engine.

Another concern is at least with the Cayman engine excess oil pump pressure is bled off by routing the oil back to the intake side of the oil pump. This oil comes from the oil on the dirty side of the oil filter. I worry about the oil pump suffering premature wear from this.

Also, what you can't see is contamination the oil accumulates as the engine breaks in.

While I have been quite fortunate -- most of the time -- to have a good sales rep I don't ask him/her for break in recommendations. The owners manual spell this out in sufficient detail and it is not hard to follow the guidelines/recommendations.

Every vehicle I buy I buy with the belief I'll own the vehicle forever. I want to start the new vehicle out right and following the break in guidelines is part of this.

An early oil/filter service is another part. If I don't do it before the end of break in I would certainly do it at the end of break in.

After break in with the engine full of dirty/contaminated oil I simply could not enjoy the vehicle more fully, if you know what I mean.
