I ran across that same comment, and it is found on Wiki as well, but no mention in any BMW official site....all other plants mentioned in detail but no mention of Mexico. Could find no BMW source that mentions a BMW plant in Mexico for motorcycle manufacture....perhaps it shut down and that is from old info?
Dunno...i was interested as i previously owned a BMW bike and was aware they expanded to other countries for assembly and manufacture, but surprisingly no mention of any plant in Mexico in any current BMW source? Maybe it is making non BMW branded motorcycles or?? dunno.

Currently the only BMW Motorrad plant is in Berlin Spandau. Only low end models (G310) is made in India as it's a TVS model somehow rebranded to BMW.

Yeah, not sure why articles are mentioning Mexico plants?

Again this is not entirely correct as i mentioned in previous post.
the following are quotes from BMW International Production website:
Quote:
In November 2013, production of the BMW F 800 R for the Thai market started at the Rayong assembly plant. Today, seven different models for Asian markets are manufactured at the site. These include the BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure, as well as the super sports bike, the BMW S 1000 RR.
Rayong is in Thailand.

Quote:
As early as 2009, BMW Motorrad commissioned Dafra Motos in Manaus with assembling BMW motorcycles for the local market. In 2016, BMW Motorrad took over the plant and has since been building several of its motorcycles there
based on CKD kits shipped from the Berlin plant. Nine different models for the Brazilian market are now being manufactured at a plant with a floor space of around 8,000 square meters. These include the BMW R 1250 GS, R 1250 GS Adventure, our S 1000 RR super sports bike, and the G 310 R in the 500 cc segment
Manaus is in Brazil

Loncin, China plant manufactures engines for the BMW F 750 GS and F 850 GS.
And as previous noted India manufactures the BMW G 310 R

The G42 in this thread wasn't made in Mexico. VIN shows Germany...

Well, that's an very interesting find!

I'm pretty sure Jack at AutoID had one of (if not THE) first G42 in the UK... I wonder if that's why. How strange!

What makes you say that, the VIN shows it made in Mexico!!!
At least the one pict that clearly shows the VIN that was posted in the referenced link.

The only picture I see that clearly shows a VIN has the VIN starting with WBA, not 3MW.

I’d say that the VIN is pretty irrelevant, unless they hand built the car in Germany, there is no G42 assembly line there

I'd say it's relevant if the VIN starts with a letter that is assigned to assembly in Germany. This is assuming VIN's carry the weight we assume they do with being an accurate encrypted description of a vehicle.

I may well be wrong but i was taking my assumption from BMWs own VIN search and listing of country of manufacture.

Right. But the assumption that has been made is that all Mexico produced cars have VINs that start with 3MW. I trust that site shows the correct information and they must have just switched the VIN prefix at some point.

Obviously, that's the big mystery.

Everything I can find shows "WBA" assigned to Germany.

The vin starting with WBA doesn't matter, this letters idenfied only manufacturer, and at least European vehicules built outside Germany have WBA vin.

For example, this is a 220i G42 that I drove several month ago.
wba11cm0x08c4****
Position 11 is the production plant and in this case 8 is mexico, same as autoid

PD: a bit outdated but pretty clear, only cars for NA gets 3MW VIN code (in the sheet , probably for some some kind of import duties benefit.

Thanks a bunch for clearing this up. I always kinda knee jerk when someone tells me it's made in Germany or where ever other than Mexico.
