230i in snow - input welcome!

So, I知 one of those people who can afford the price of admission to BMW world, but ownership is more of a stretch. I知 used to Hondas. I live in southern Ohio. Have to deal with snow several days of the year, and my driveway has somewhat of an incline. My FWD drive cars have never had a problem with the amount of snow we typically deal with. Could I drive the RWD in some snow with all seasons on? The thought of winter tires sounds expensive and like a hassle. Thanks!

Hi Lee, can't comment on this new model of course. But I lived in northern NJ with 2 different E46 coupes that were RWD. I swapped out each Thanksgiving weekend separate wheels & winter tires on all 4 wheels. I had Blizzacks on my 325ci and then years later Dunlop Sport Winter tires on my sweet 330ci.

That said, I lived in hilly NW Jersey and drove in light snow with no issues, My 3 series coupes tracked well & I stayed in lower gear most of time and kept steady speed. Also both having manuals helped, but this G42 you can shift manually also. Good luck, just don't use your front spoiler as a snow plow

Lee, I do not know your climate, but here is a rule of thumb I use. Can I just leave it in the garage / driveway when it snows? If the answer is no, I would not depend on All Season (misnomer) tires and RWD. I would Make a different plan.

That痴 an excellent point. I have an AWD Volvo XC60 that I bought for my parents to use when they stay with us (missionaries overseas that stay for months when they visit). Most of the time I could use this when it snows. Only a handful of times would this not be the case. I知 pretty pragmatic and tend to plan for every contingency. A 230i does not allow for that. I just really want one. Mid-life semi-crisis is gnawing at me a little and I知 contemplating being a little more adventurous than I tend to be.

Invest in a good set of snow tires and go for it.

You don't have to buy a 2nd set of wheels, just have them swapped on and off the factory wheels.

Enjoy the car :-)

Garage List
I have driven RWD cars all year in Michigan (we get snow and ice!) pretty much since High School many years ago. I've driven everything from pickups, to Mustangs to BMW's and more. A good example is back in the day I had a 99 Mustang GT convertible that literally would get stuck at the base of my driveway in anything more than a dusting of snow. I put a good set of winter tires on that car and was pretty easily able to drive it through 6" of snow. I'm confident in saying a 230 with good winter tires will make a great daily in any weather.

As long as you don't get overcharged for swapping tires, getting a winter set just means you can go twice as long with your initial set if you have a place to store the tires away from the elements. I bought a set of winter tires and have my "summer" tires in storage. I know that doesn't work for everyone, but I like the confidence of knowing I can drive in bad weather. IIRC, tire rack did a study the other year where a RWD 3 series with winter tires did better than an xdrive 3 series with all seasons.

Agreed, swapping tires on the same wheels is bad news. Also since most of these cars come with 19" wheels, Winter 18s is a better option for many folks.
