Given the choice, hands down, no question the Cayman is the winner by far in my opinion. The video was interesting, to bad YouTube translate wasn't doing a great job translating the subtitles to English.

A stronger engine can do nothing against a lighter, better balanced chassis, Bmw can only play the game in terms of comfort, technology and practicality.
The 718 (with the right engine) is an incredible driving machine.

The instrument cluster in that Porsche is just perfect.
The one in the BMW probably presents the same info but is so uninspiring

A translation would have been nice, but we can all imagine the commentary and outcome; the BMW was nice and torquey, but the Porsche had superior handling, road feel, trackability, etc., etc.

Yep, it's a Porsche, and I would love t have one if financial and practicality issues allowed.

The M240 hits a different sweet spot on the decision matrix. I can compete on US roads both performance wise and status wise reasonably well, and still fit my bicycle in the back with the seats folded down👍

I am surprised by the choice of car for this comparo and pretty impressed by the time it pulled. Mostly same time as a Cayman 718 for a car with 4 seat, decent trunk and AWD you can use all year long! Porsche had the PDK and sport chrono package and bigger wheel…not sure if she had other goodies like PASM or the vectoring diff.

I searched for other similar comparo and found the following…wondering if this track was Contidrom…that would make the new M240 similar to the OG M2 on this track.

Yes, but the BMW also has more torque and +/- 80hp advantage. This may be unpopular, but I don't think apples to apples a BMW will ever beat a Porsche overall. Porsche are very focused and highly engineered, where I feel BMW has to design to a bit more "mass market" appeal (4 seat, sedans, everyday use/AWD, etc). Also, don't count the Porsche out on comfort vs the M240. I don't find my 981 and less comfortable than my F30 340i, yes the F30 is roomier but the comfort of the seat, suspension, driving position etc is probably better in the 981. I feel that the 2 generally reach different customers, BMW's (save some models) are often used as daily drivers and excel at that, where most Porsches (save for SUVs) are bought as 2nd+ cars. Both have their place, and both are excellent products in their respective segments.

I rented a cayman with PASM for a week out in San Francisco.

The suspension was definitely more stiffer and harsher than my previous m3 and m2 competition. Obviously a better sorted Suspension for spirited driving but you feel every bump.

The only way an F30 is less comfortable is if you are running runflats which is a different matter all together.

In addition to what others mentioned above, just too words: "steering feel".
And yes - I also think the two cars are built to serve different market segments.

This is a stupid comparison in my opinion.

*For a US model*
You can configure a M240i with every available option, selecting the most expensive option on everything and it comes to $58,500

The base 718 Cayman with no options at all is $61,850 and for that you get 300 Hp and an advertised 0-60 of 4.9 seconds.

If you configure similar options the Porsche is much more expensive than the M240i.

I'll take a fully loaded M240i over a 718 with no options any day.

For me, my issue is I find the Cayman beautiful. The 2 Series is "can I live with the looks". Time will tell.

And the weight difference is huge, which translates to such a different feel.

Plus the Cayman will hold a better resale value and is a more fun car to drive (I assume based on my 340). But each has their place and market.

Having driven both a 2018 cayman 718 s and the 22 m240xi, they are very different in feel, to me. The cayman is a sports car. You feel it when you get in. You feel it when you drive around corners. The car is flat and hugs the corner in a way that the bmw can't even with awd. The only point of bashing is the engine noise but a good exhaust helps (ours had a great exhaust.) But it's definitely no NA flat 6. The bmw is a sporty car. It's great fun, it sounds nice, and has a nice interior, and that's why I'm getting one, but is not a Porsche.
