E Series NBT Evo Retrofit Development Thread
This thread is here to dump as much information about the eNBT EVO retrofit as possible. I know Mashman, 2real4u and others have already completed this retrofit but there is not too much information about it floating around online.
The 2018-2019 accident season has been bringing down the prices of NBT Evo parts. I just snagged a EVO + ATM for $650 out of a 2018 BMW 330i. I assume EVO prices will continue to drop as more and more cars get totaled out due to winter driving accidents. Parts List: Car Systems eNBT emulator $450-$500 NBT Evo Black Top $400-$600 ATM $200-$300 NBT Next Screen $150-$250 NBT Display Cable 61119322242 $50 CID Voltage Regulator $40 CCC CID $50 Cat 6 Cable $20 Obar Pins 61119374919 $50 Obar Connector 61139299610 $1 Various ATM Connectors Various Wires Various Junk BT Ant 61119278968 $20 Wifi Ant 61119278133 $20 FM2 Antenna Cable 61119372322 $12 Center console USB cable 61119372375 $30 (Will need to swap farka connector with cic cable) Pre-LCI cars will need to retrofit ENET wiring and will need a $150 CIC face plate. Logic 7 or individual audio cars will a need F30 or F12 Logic7 Amp $300-$600 Expect to be pushing $2000 USD to retrofit a NBT Evo into an E series car. This retrofit is costly and difficult. This should only be performed by professional idiots who think it is ok to spend 1/4 of the value of their car on navigation equipment. I will be making a large order with my car systems dealer this month if anyone wants to split DHL costs. They sell the emulators, voltage regulators and even full Evo kits for $600 euro + fees. Keep in mind you will need to convert them from ECE to US. I am not going to market Evo kits like I do with the cic so I will be making a PDF guide after this is all done. I am not is a rush to finish this as I do not have $2,000 to dump on this all at once. I currently need about $400 worth of parts left to purchase and I need to recover from dropping $650 today. I think these are vin locked so once you register them with your car they can not be re used on another car. 3 years ago , i did non i drive to cic + combox retrofit. for the last couple of months i been thinking about going to EVO, but just cant justify spending money on this especially on enbt adapter. I made my own canbus devices using an arduino that can wake a cic or nbt units on the bench for testing. Like you said, hard to justify spending that much money on nav upgrade for to 1/4 of the cost of the car. cid voltage regulator can be made cheap if you already have nbt to cid cable. Voltage regulator i believe drops voltage from 12vdc to 7.5vdc Last edited by Gray335i; 01-02-2019 at 09:43 PM.. |

bimmerretrifit adapters are vin locked for sure, car systems are not. that's a big plus .
I am not trying to promote bimmerretofit adapter i was just pointing out that they are on sale. |

my boss just got 2019 M5, and it came with evo ID 6 . he was showing me on his iphone all these cool features especially bird view of where the car is park and all current surroundings.pretty cool. My biggest hold back is the emulator.

Just kidding. I do have a question, kind of related to this whole infotainment system. Sorry if this is derailing your build log. My question is about the iDrive screens; would it be possible to use them as an HDMI LCD screen? Feed them the signal from an HDMI source? |

For the OABR connections, I bought the socket and pins from pelican parts, like 30 bucks for two sockets and a dozen pins shipped.

Also, I totally get this project. Is it worth doing? Nah, but it is partly just about the project itself.
Got an F series HK/L7 amp + E series L7 speakers for $150 from my yard including the last 3 feet of the L7 amp cable so I can join it to my car. (my car came with the standard 10-speaker e91 "hifi" setup. I'll be converting it to an 11-speaker setup for now, to include the underseat subs, front-door and rear-door mid+tweet, and center channel. will add the rear mid+tweets later, since it requires pulling down and replacing the headliner in the e91, and finding an l7 e91 headliner is near-impossible locally) Another $100 for the dash-mounted idrive button panel, the console-mounted idrive wheel already mounted in the right wood-grain LCI idrive frame (non-touch for now, maybe i'll add touch later), a usb jack for the glove box, a usb/aux jack for the center console, a usb glovebox cable, and a second bluetooth antenna to use with the wifi jack for apple carplay. Bought an apix2 screen, black top evo, and ATM from ebay for 700. I have the retrofit adapter from bmwnbt.com... we'll have to compare how well this one works against your CarSystems adapter. I also bought a usb -> CANBUS adapter so I can send the correct wake-up signals from my laptop for bench testing. And amazon sent me two of them by mistake. If I get it to work, I can send you one of them. Once I get a working CID cable I'll start bench testing to know what connectors I'm still missing... probably swing by the yard again next weekend to cut out the terminals for an ATM if I can find a yard with a new enough car. I actually have both an 8.8 and a 10.25 touch screen that are meant to be the tablet-style-stick-out-of-the-dash (from f30 and x5). Trying to decide which to use, will probably make the call once i can power them both up.
If I don't like the sticking-out-of-dash look, i might see if I can get an 8.8 touchscreen from a mini (65506820386), since it looks like that can be mounted into the original CID frame *without* cracking the touchscreen.... but for now, there's about 2 of those in junked cars in the whole country... I would go with grounded/ shielded Cat6 , just a suggestions.
you can probably find it cheaper but you get an idea. https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters...=cat6+shielded Maybe ill get back to this project as well. Does the spec call for cat6? i imagine shielded cat5 would be okay...
As for reverse engineering the retrofit adapter? there is really not that much to it. it has two canbus interfaces, one running at 100kbps, one running at 500kbps, and it acts as a filtering gateway from one to the other. You need to filter out anything that would communicate the VIN, as we'll be running a different vin on the nbt/atm than in the car. Beyond that, we just need to hope that the messages are the same between the cars. attach a canbus signal monitor to both kcan1 and kcan2 on the adapter... send a steering wheel command, and see if the message and headers are the same. turn the idrive wheel, etc... you'd need whatever arduino to have enough digital inputs as well to read from the CIC dash control panel, which has 8 buttons, 6 of which are touch-sensitive, and one volume/power knob. should be relatively easy to reverse engineer that, as i believe it is direct wires to each button. |

I can monitor all canbus messages with Arduino and Ta1055 or canbus shield so number of digital inputs on arduiono is irrelevant. Alps using a same setup you can send as many messages to canbus as long as you know their id. Message IDs are the same between 2 protocols as fast as I can tell
