In light of everything, get yourself Prius. BMW is not for you.

My question is, why use a fuel economy oil (0w20) in the M2? Any technical reason? Or is it cheaper?

The only reason would be if your manual says to and you want the least potential of warranty claim issues. It's technically worse in all ways but fuel economy.

Just to meet the fuel efficiency guidelines so this thing doesn't list as a gas guzzler.

In all seriousness, all manufacturers are trying to get to lower viscosity oils to reduce friction. I don't believe there is fundamentally a technical issue for the lower viscosity and I won't run 0W20 when I am changing my own.

The S58 doesn’t accept 0w20. There is a fundamental technical issue with running too thin an oil in an engine not designed for it.

That’s why I’m confused as to why some are choosing to run it. Is it much cheaper, or what is the reason? I mean, why not just run the required oil?

Here in Romania the dealer is using BMW oil 5W30 (83212465849). As i have a prepaid maintenance program, I am stuck with thei oil but I will do an oil change at half their interval (aprox 8000km).
I just done the oil change and I will send a sample to Blackstone Lab. for analysis to see how it looks after 8000km of relative hard driving

Any reason Liquid Moly Special Tec B FE SAE 0W-30 wouldn’t meet the requirements?

Specifications / Approvals

It does meet the specs for the S58 due to it's LL-01 FE rating.

It's a suitable LL-01FE oil. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy it, but if it's cheaper or easier to get than the BMW oil then it is a good option.
