First drive - Hands on in Seattle with the M240i!

Ok not purely an "///M" but.. this also is a preview of where BMW is taking the G87 when it arrives.

That said, the M240 shouldn't just live in the shadow of it's coming bigger brother as this really is a great car and a substantial update to the platform. Actually Joe Achilles was wildly complimentary of this in his recent review as well and noted a few places where it is likely superior to his M!

BMW Seattle let me know they had a brand new M240i xdrive just off the truck, so I hustled down to get hands on immediately.

This is the brand new 2nd generation of the 2 series, and the G42 doesn't disappoint. All of the new technology with the digital cockpit, updated suspension and the incredibly potent B58 motor. If you are not familiar with that engine, it is really amazing and powers a wide variety of cars even including the new Supra!

For the tuner and enthusiast crowd, the B58 has an unbelievable amount of headroom in power and torque if you want to take it that direction.

Hands on, the M240 was really fun, quick and impressive in rear wheel bias even with the xdrive system. It is very much a worthy successor to the F22, and improves in almost every area.

Check it out if you get a chance, I have a suspicion that these are going to be wildly popular.

(oh and yeah.. the new 'thundernight metallic' purple is gorgeous, as they have one, it just wasn't prepped yet)

I just picked my Midnight Metallic one up tonight and I have to say this is a great car. Coming from an old 08' 335i as my last BMW (I had that tuned up with Dinan stage 3) this car is interesting. The B58 is great of course but the interior of the new bmw cars is fantastic. The M2 would have been nice to grab but this is a close second with most of the normal duty being work related driving around town. I gotta say that if you are ordering and waiting on the M240i than I imagine you guys will be very happy. I need to get some photos uploaded this weekend but in truth there have been a few cars that look 90% like my spec. The main difference with mine is that its blacked out wheels and front grill so there is no chrome accents or whatever they call that material now. The purple or midnight color is much darker in person I found. Its very brilliant with the metallic flakes in the right lighting.

Does anyone remember if these were suppose to have wireless charging for phones?

The feature seems to have come and gone at different times during the ordering process the last few months. I am fairly certain it was not a seperate option or even part of a package when I ordered in early September.

It seems to be included in some of the HEA models that dealers are getting and is now being added back into builds judging from forum members who are currently in production or in the process of selecting their builds.

I haven't pushed the car much since its breaking in cycle has just started but the car is quick and handles great. Its hard to really gauge the Xdrive vs rwd on just city streets quite honestly. I think what is most interesting to me is this car is basically an Iphone with wheels now. It is so digital compared to older models 12-15 years ago. This is both a good and bad thing I think. Its great when it all works but the screens also hold the key to controlling it all so when that goes out.... well, good night stereo and other controls. I am still not sure on the digital gauge cluster for the tach and speedo. So far so good but if I really was going with my heart I would want something long term like the E46 M3 interior for ease of keeping it going. This car is brilliant despite these looks gripes so don't let that discourage you. The Midnight color is great and I would have no reservations on it.

“Stills” of the blue car would be great if it’s there.

My Portimao Blue, Shadowline, black rims, w/Black Vernasco w/Blue stitching went "Ready for Shipment" today. I've seen the combo on a 340i and it was incredible. Can't wait to post photos!!

@13:30 you say it does a great job at lane keeping. I assume you're referring to the lane departure warning, and not the automated lane self-driving feature in higher-end models?

Very nice review. Around 3:20 you say that you can get the M-Sport suspension instead of the adaptive suspension for better handling. I wasn't aware of any suspension options on the M240?

Thank you! Regarding suspension, that is what I read about options, and corroborated here. Now granted, options are wonky right now because of chip and build limitation

I may have misunderstood all along. I thought the optional M-Sport suspension was for the 230i?

I may have misunderstood. I thought the optional M-Sport suspension was for the 230i since it has an optional M-Sport package?

just checked my m240i order status, and "adaptive M suspension" is a standard feature of the M240i

Awesome thank you for the double check. I must have misread the model info prior to the review.

Congrats on the new car!

I've ordered a portimao blue 240i. I'm worried about how the blue looks in person.
judging by your video and others, the portimao blue coming out of Mexico looks different to the portimao blue coming out of Germany on cars ive seen like the 420... though i dont know how that could happen. The Mexico portimao blue seems lighter (which i prefer)
maybe its just a difficult color to film, like the purple.

Portimao Blue and Mexico Blue are definitely two different blues! Mexico Blue is much lighter, almost like the waters in the Caribbean.

I've been thinking of this color combo. Couldn't decide whether I'd prefer going blue or black. I like the blue paint with the black wheels and red calipers. Seems really unique.

Would you mind posting more photos? Especially the front. I'm curious if it would look nice without the shadow line but with the black wheels. Thanks!
