Not to start a fight but this Thanksgiving I am thankful for having a real (real enough) dashboard in my '22 M240i … oh .. and a shifter too .. and a few manual controls, like AC, seat heating, etc…

The useless trim pieces between and around the two massive screens and the reduced visibility straight ahead don't bother you?

Agreed. I would love the new setup if there were still physical buttons for climate controls.

I'd have to imagine this isn't the vantage point in which the OP drives their car.

Unless you are 4' 6" it is just a silly strawman argument to say an instrument cowl reduces visibility. It also reduces glare. They've only been standard on cars since, well forever, and only recently eliminated for the "people mover" vibe.

That said, my wife just got a 2023 330i with ID8 and the screen layout looks much more appropriate in a sedan than a sports coupe.

The little nub shifter is an exponential upgrade over the ridiculous button implementation on her prior RDX, that we never got used to even after 2 years, but I still prefer a "real" shifter.

"Not to start a fight"…. But I'll take the first swing!

....I still don't get this. Ha. The driver is looking at it. What difference does it make if there's four doors or two?

To me, the wide screen gives it a "people mover" or public transportation sort of vibe, where everyone can see the instrumentation -- think bus dashboard. The "unobstructed" view from the driver's seat reminds me of sitting on a perch in a mini-van.

Back in day before huge floor consoles, many muscle cars had bench seats instead of buckets. Practicality aside, which looks more appropriate in a muscle car?

The people mover thing again. We just don't agree on this.

Bench seats were more common then but the argument I'm making is that it doesn't necessarily make it more appropriate in a muscle car. It's just what more people are used to.

This is a totally pointless thread! (Well, apart from those that like arguments)

I'm thankful I didn't buy a brand new car that had its entire interior replaced after a year

I know everyone has their own opinion on this - 22 owners are happy with their "old tech" and 23 owners are happy with their "new tech"

When it comes down to it, all of us would likely be happy and content with whichever model year, and iDrive version, we were handed keys to.

I'm thankful the car looks the same on the outside and has the same performance specs as last year. I'd take it either way and still enjoy the car. That's how it should be in my opinion.

Anyone who rags on a previous or new model year (while owning one of the two) for something they changed is definitely looking for a fight.

It sorta reminds me of an old flip phone, opened up and laying on its side. Ironically; similarly obsolete. Ah those old clunker 2022s still have a place in my heart. BMW should have included with them a sticker to turn the roof antenna into a sundial to tie together with the interior aesthetic.

Just playing. I love my ID7 '22 X3M but I am super excited to have an ID8 car and play with the new stuff.

Amen to that. Driving is a physical activity, defined in part by the tactile. Using switches does not require that I lay eyes, but making sure my finger is in the right place on the screen so that I change the music vs. turning something else off DOES require that my eyes leave the road, and my attention leaves the act of driving.

Eyes on road

My eyes are always leaving the road to check how fast I am going.
The dash electronics isn’t the make or break for me with this car. It is the motor and driving it makes me amazed.

Everyone said the same thing about texting with T9 being easier than smart phones. It was true; on my old Nextel I could type paragraphs behind my back with one hand. With a smart phone I sometimes have to battle autocorrect and typos on the same word a dozen times in a row and if I couldn't look directly at it, it would be hopeless.

I wish ID8 kept the climate control buttons. But other than that (and the power/reboot), I have never touched a single button on the dash of my ID7 car.

Ford made a stick on tactile control for their EV touch screen. Hilariously underneath it, it is just touching the screen for you, but gives you a 3 dimensional interface. For a permanently placed touch interface like the climate control, this could be a simple add-on for the aftermarket.

Well as stated above, those with iD7 are going to praise and stand behind the fact that they have an actual automatic shifter, a shroud and buttons for HVAC and favorites. Those with iD8 will praise the fact that the graphics blow iD7 out the water, the additional ambient lighting on the dash, and the quite frankly HUGE single screen. Personally I was stuck getting an iD8 vehicle and that's kinda how I felt at first. Especially with waiting for as long as I had to, I almost had some regret with not getting iD7.

But after a month of ownership the only gripe I personally have is that the HUGE screen is prone to glare when the morning sun is beating from behind me. 20% ceramic tint is going on, and hopefully that clears up the only issue I really have with the big screen.

I honestly don't know what I would have done had I only the choice to get the giant '23 screen. I was already upset that there were no analog dials on my '22 M240i. I traded in a '14 (first year) 428i for it, with wonderful analog gauges.

What does the shifter do for you? It's not a manual lol.

How often do you press the HVAC buttons after you start the car? Your body overheats a lot?

I think its hilarious how MY22 owners try to make themselves feel good about their outdated car that's less than 1 year old. Keep telling yourselves whatever you want lol
