Yep… nevertheless it is now visible as a quad exhaust which was part of the discussion in this thread that M Performance vehicles are now receiving the appearance of quad exhaust that once were exclusive to full M cars.

Doesn't bother me.I have no problem if BMW wants to put the full real round quad exhaust pipes on all M performance vehicles. They look great.

The round exhaust is reserved for full M cars only, as you can see in the previously mentioned video clip @14m38s.

Upon writing my last reply I was reminded that I need to watch my language around the forum regarding what an "M" model is. Some people really get bent out of shape and offended if you dare refer to the performance models as 'M-Lite', 'not a full M' or 'not a real M car'. Never mind that BMW refers to them in the same manner as you can see for yourself in the aforementioned video clip above for instance as well as in this clip "...because there is no real M7" - Domagoj Dukec, BMW Head of Design. These same people disregard the fact that everyone from automotive journalists to YouTube influencers also refer to these models the same way.

To the pious amongst us, holding such a thought means you are a terrible person who frowns on non-M cars and should be called out. All of this of course is based on biases and conjecture.

I watched the clip but isn't it confirmed by the 1 series pic in this thread that some M performance models are getting a real quad exhaust?

Yeah, this M140 and also the new X1 have both been side with round quad exhaust pipes, so clearly not reserved for full M models

I’ve only seen that on test mules, not final production. Do you have an example?

Of course they're M-lite lol. I happen to own one, can't believe someone would be offended by that. Are you sure you didn't post on a Lexus forum. Speak anything less than high praise about a Lexi and you're chastised and given a warning. Let's hope this fora doesn't emulate that space.

I too own an M-Lite as my daily. It's a great car for what it is, but it's not a true M car. I've been chastised on this forum many times for saying that. It literally works some people up, as if it's some type of personal attack on them. People are weird.

At one time they were… highly exclusive when it was the E28 M5, E24 M6, and E30 M3.

I always love these threads. An M car has always been what BMW has wanted it to be. The first M3 was a 4 cylinder and then when it switched to 6, well how dare BMW put anything other than a naturally aspirated straight 6? The M5 has always been all over the place in terms of engines. Who cares if they are putting quad exhausts on an "unofficial" M car? Buy it if you like it. If you don't, find something else.

Let's think about that for a minute.

E28:

• M535i (M "Lite") was offered from 1985 - on along with the…
• M5 (M88/3) was almost called the M535Si to avoid confusion with the lower performance M5 (S38), but a certain Bob didn't think 4 door cars could be marketed as "sporty".

E24:

• M6 (S38) was the "M-Lite" with the smaller designation to avoid confusion with the…
• Higher performance "Full M" M635CSi (M88/3)

E30:

• 320iS was S14 powered with a dogleg gearbox (somewhat of a reverse M Lite)
• M325i was a real model
• There were numerous M-Tech special models with various names available unless you were in the US.
• M3 didn't have M mirrors nor a Hoffmeister Kink

The list goes on and on.

On the one hand, i don't love it either.

On the other hand, M cars have always been "car nerd cars" that normal people think look exactly like the models they're based on.

Nothing has changed. Car nerds still know the difference and normal people still think they look identical.
