Times are changing. HP or TQ don't differentiate cars, as 400+ hp engines are available en mass from the factory. When you get to that much power it's all about putting it on the road. It is today's drivetrains, the trannies, the diffs and the high tech traction electronics that win races. Add advanced 4WD and you ll say "what physics? Pssht"

Besides BMW’s masterful B58 engine, BMW’s other masterpiece is their xdrive, which IMO has been overlooked by RWD traditionalists but is now proving to be one of the best AWD systems out there. Xdive will be the smart choice for anyone who wants to take “full advantage” of today’s powerful engines, whether at launch or in the corners or yes even on damp roads. Bob |

Agreed.
I think car journalists are afraid to embrace the new era where traction is king. They play it safe by writing about the "good old RWD times" and doing burnouts and slides on queue. I used to light up the tires on my E36 M3 in the 90s, but "it doesn't do it for me any more" Getting 60ft times that rival drag cars and getting on 100% throttle after the apex as if I am driving a track car is a much more rewarding experience. That's why the F80 didn't convince all the proper ///M fanboys. Undertired and overpowered as it was, 911s were having them for breakfast at the track |
