Topgear's M240i review compares with 440i and 8-series

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com

Review: https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/...to/first-drive

"What’s BMW up to here? It has too many cars that do the same job. The 2 Series is now just as composed and competent as a 4 Series, which in turn makes a mockery of the existence of the bloated, overpriced 8 Series. Bad news if you’ve just bought the flagship, while the M240i looks like a bit of a bargain."

Exactly, I don't see it as a " why have models that do the same thing " issue, I think it's smart to have an option like this in a few different price ranges. It broadens the appeal and availability for folks

The reality is there are people out there that can afford an 8 series as easily as I can afford the #1 combo at Whataburger. If I was in that camp I'd take the 8 over the M240i in a heartbeat.

It really is a sweetheart and a great mix between luxury and sports car in my opinion. Sure not perfect, but a damn good car for the money. Gotta give BMW credit for this one.

Now hopefully the reliability holds up for us folks who are gonna keep it for the long term 🤞

I agree 💯, it's definitely an amazing car though, and it strikes a great balance. I came from Audi's before my 240i, and I have been blown away by this car. It's all the fun you want ( for most people) while still being a great great every day driver

It packs the most BMW DNA for the smallest price. My dreamcar was never so affordable, and I'am 50 yrs old!

I also made the reflection comparing the 8, 4 and 2 in the showroom. But the 2 seems the one made for one purpose specifically: F U N.

Another thing that strikes me is the controversy about the looks from certain angels. But, I just adore this design! It has so much character from ALL angles and views. You immediately spot it as a BMW, it has a broad stance, looks mean and at the same time, is such a peach in daily use.

I showed my wife an interior shot of the 8 series and she thought I was showing her a picture of my car.

Plus, the back seat of the 8 series has less room than 2 series.

So yeah, except for the more power engine, I'm not sure why anyone would get the 8 series over the 2 series. And to be honest, at that price, I wouldn't even consider the 8 series.

Come on guys... Some here need a reality check...
I love the M240 (and someday my order will actually be built and delivered). But to say that there is not much difference between the 2 series and 8 series is bonkers. The current 2 series is looks good to me and not nearly as bad as many make it out to be. But the 8 series is mind blowingly gorgeous.

I’ve had an 840d for the last couple of years and recently ordered a new M240i to replace it! I’ve loved my 8 but looking forward to the 2 as it should be more fun and dynamic to drive. I’ve added as many options as possible so the spec will be near enough the same. I’ve not managed to test drive one yet but I did try an M440i Coupe which I was very impressed with, so hoping the M240i will be better still

Of course they don't look the same, but stating the 8 series looks way better is subjective. To me the 8 series looks bloated, inflated and rounded, not at all reminiscent to the prototype that announced it. To me the 2 looks more built for purpose and more dynamic. When I would have both in my garage, the 2 would be used way more. Agree, this is also subjective.

It's nice to have a small coupe that's still very high quality, luxurious, and pratical. Coming from an RS5 and having driven a bunch of large coupes like the 4 and 8, I just honestly don't get the appeal of these gargantuan two door cars. They're neither more practical nor more fun two drive than something like an M240i.

Best wait to frame the M240i for me is to look at an xDrive G82 M4. This car is half the price but nowhere near half the car.

I think it’s right to look at the M240i as a performance bargain.

As poster above, I also had an B9 RS5. Dynamically the 240 is on another level.

For all things in this physical constrained world, there is the ubiqitious law of diminishing returns. The G82 is the superiour car, but when the M240i is only half the price, it's only trailing behind 10% at best. I could live with that sacrifice since I'am not driving daily on Daytona nor the German Autobahn.

And of course, the M240i heralds the pure sportscar architecture unlike the RS5 which is a strange cocktail of a FWD car (designed to assemble low cost), with intestines formerly shared with a R8 supercar. That explains why the harder you push it, the more it feels like a compromise and instead of engaging the driver more, it probably does the opposite.

So the M240i is maybe the last real bargain ICE drivers car the world might see.

Let's all be honest with ourselves here. The 8er is really a 6er and the 2er has gotten big enough to be the 4er… so we're really comparing a 4 to a 6… this m240i is basically the coupe version of the 3er.

Might do the same here. Cost aside, I'm already getting a bit bored of my 8 and I've only had it for 15 months. It's a great car, but the luxury things I love about it I get in my SUV, and "fast" is just a relative feeling, which I don't get in the M8 anymore after 15,000 miles like I did consistently in my M3 for all 3 years.
