Those with a BT Scanner

I just ordered mines and I have a few questions....

I'm assuming you can only read and clear codes if you have the bt scanner cable hooked up to a laptop?

What do you do if your car is tuned and breaks down on the side of the road requiring bmw to come tow it? Unless you have a laptop and a bt scanner with you at all times you could be screwed by the dealer if they see codes no?

Thanks,
Alan

well then take a laptop with you if you are planning a long trip and expect your car to die all of a sudden. usually cars go into limp modes which means they are still driveable. heck, all you ened to do is restart your car and it should be gone, just drive your ass home and plug it into your computer.

I just want to make sure I am covered in case something like this does happen where the car isn't driveable for whatever reason and you are tuned. I was thinking maybe keeping a cheap netbook in the trunk of the car. spending 1-200 bucks on a cheap netbook is better than having bmw deny your warranty because of a tune.

This is exactly what I do. Make sure to get an AC adapter that works with the car, too, just in case.

It also comes in handy if you stop at a coffee shop, or get stuck waiting somewhere. WiFi is everywhere these days.

The only catch is that you also have to have the ability to remove your tune. Depending on what you have, it can be as simple as an 8mm socket and a small screwdriver.

Finally, keep in mind that if your car has fizzled out, and when BMW does get it, there are no codes, they are going to know something is up. So it's important to know what you are doing, which codes you are erasing, and why.

I'll never understand why people rush to call BMW when their car breaks. Tow it home, remove mods, call BMW. It's called AAA

In the days when flash tuning was in its infancy I used to get quite a few codes. If you press the start/stop button four times whilst on the move it resets the fault code. The car might still be drivable but the codes are stored. This is a quick fix for people getting Cat code or torque manipulation codes.

I would agree that it would might create suspicion if there were no codes, but that's not a basis for denying warranty service. No codes being present doesn't prove anything. In any case, he would just clear the codes which might indicate tuning and leave the rest.
