I had to drop mine off at the dealer to recode the nav, which happened to correspond with the car reaching the 1,200mi mark on the way over. I already had a loaner set up so I said screw it, might as well do a possibly unnecessary oil change too. Standard pricing was $125 on 2 series.

If I start doing my own oil changes, I might just say screw it and do all of them with the oil of my choice. Idk… still have quite a few miles to think about it |

But then reason and logic doe not always prevail. My annual is coming up in January and will post here if successful in convincing the service dept to vary from the US 2022 specs. |

Had my first 12month dealership oil change on the 2022 M240x. As ya all know for US spec 240's only 0-20 is speced. The Euro spec 2022 240 does have the ll12 fe spec (0-30) and in 2023 the US changed to include the ll12 fe (0-30) in addition to the ll14fe (0-20). I explained this to the service manager and provided copies of said manual sections to document those claims of mine. The manager wanted copies of those sections which I provided and they agreed to write up ll12fe 0-30 on the work order.
They did get the last word though. Going thru the 9 page (yep 9 pages) copy of the invoice etc i find yep they installed 0-30 but they included the ominous statement Quote:
Side note: while i was at the dealership i spied a black BMWi8, striking at first but then really checking it out, i didn't care for the weird rear half styling. There was a M4 convertible with the top down that just didn't look right to me. But most impressive was an i7x drive with 21 inch rims. I generally don't care for the massive vertical grille they use on some models but it fit this car proportionally. Paint was called an oxide grey, a very light grey with a slight brownish tint, awesome interior, that car had presence big time...but then at 140 grand i guess it should. |

good idea! Problem was they did not argue with me at all, were very accommodating, said no problem. When i picked up the car and signed for the work done i specifically asked if 0-30 was used, they said yes, nothing else. Only after i got it home and reviewed all pages i found that statement buried towards the bottom of a following page. It would have been different if they had mentioned that "statement" or discussed the ramifications with me...they did not, they quietly just snuck it in...i would have argued and had them change the language on it....or at least include the caveat that "while 0-30 is not specified for the 2022 M240 it IS specified for the identical engine in the 2023" or something like that...hopefully others getting a first oil change can watch for this and check what they write up before you sign off. |

I'm going to the dealer for my 10K change. My buddy had a heavily modded/SC'd E92 M3 and said the dealership I plan to go to for service is one of the best and they treated his M3 well. I am hoping they don't give me shit when I ask for something as simple as 0w30.

I've mentioned this in a separate thread, but when I changed my oil at 1,200 miles I've NEVER seen oil pour out like water as I did with the 0-20 coming out of this car.
I'm not arguing that 0-20 isn't providing the necessary protection, but it's not for me. |

Update:
I revisited the dealership this morn and made my case (again) and they kindly edited the work order to reflect that the 0w-30 ll12fe is an approved oil per 2023 model guidance. (They did install the 0-30 as i requested yesterday but the work order basically said it was the "wrong" oil.) For those that want some backup documentation, a forum member has kindly made a link to a 2023 manual pdf, (oil specs page 322) under the "manual pdf" sticky. Make a copy of that page and bring to dealership for backup...if ya wanna do ll12-fe 0-30. |

Thanks for the update on 2023 oils...Just ordered my LL-12FE 0W-30 for when Summer arrives! I'll just do it myself lest I have some BMW lawyer...I mean tech...give me a hard time about what oil to use.

I normally do all my own oil changes, but hey i ain't gonna pass up a free oil change. And actually they did not give me a hard time at all, very accommodating, I just did not like the caveat they put on the work order that i was not aware of. When i revisted them they rectified it. So no gripes here.
Its only the first oil change thats the freebe right (no optional maint plan)? |

If time is important to you, then by all means doing it yerself is the best bet.
Figure 15-20 minutes doing it yourself. At dealership, even though had an appointment, it was 1 hr 45 minutes. add drive time and I'm almost 2-1/2 hours for that change. |

Actually i was glad i did a 500 mile oil change (5-30 Castrol Euro spec), as i found that the drain plug was barely finger tight. I put a wrench on it and felt next to no resistance...and i know torque values pretty well.
What is weird is that now that they have changed the oil, the menu function that let's you check the oil level has been deactivated. Used to be it had to run a couple minutes (fully warmed) to actually measure and report. Now it just immediately says...oil level ok, it does not go thru that measurement process. Not sure it was fully warmed up (that may be the problem) so i will try again after I've gotten the oil fully warmed. Will report back. |

But, my local dealer has a good reputation and they even have enthusiast events at the dealership. So I'm on the fence. I'll ultimately have to go there eventually for service, for things I cannot (or don't want to) do myself |

Food for thought: ALL BMW models called for a 1200-mile service, not just the M models, not that many years ago. When did they stop the 1200-mile service for non-M cars? The moment they started including 4 years/50k miles of free service (since lowered to 3/36k and less things covered). Coincidence? Methinks not.

Ya think 0w-20 is thin, How about the 0w-12 BMW is now specing, for the same B58N engine as ours(M240) in the 2023 G07 X7 and G70 740i made after August/October 2022. Me thinks some of the sludge i drink called coffee has a higher viscosity.
