E-Fan seems to run unnecessarily
I’ve noticed (nothing new) that my engine fan seems to kick in fairly often even though ambient temps here are cool (around 30° F) and engine is not at operating temp of 97° C.
As you’d imagine, I have cabin heat on at these temps. Turning it off doesn’t seem to change things appreciably. Thermostat and water pump aren’t that old (OE parts), and I don’t recall seeing any DTCs for map thermostat or anything else cooling system related. Radiator is also near new (genuine part). Coolant level is good. No leaks. No overheating or other actual issues, just seems odd that my car is so determined to keep the engine below operating temp, even when sitting idle. Any ideas? TIA

Have you checked the coolant temp sensor?

Can you elaborate? I can confirm with a probe in coolant overflow, if that helps…
Temperatures make enough sense but I don’t understand why the e-fan would need to run at these temps, especially prior to thermostat open temp. :/ I have :-). Mentioned in my post. Issue has been ongoing for a while and I’ve pulled DTCs periodically but see nothing related to this. Will check again soon though.

It's part 17 on this realoem diagram, looks like some configurations don't have it. It has something to do with the fan control, not sure if it would cause your symptoms but it's a good place to check. https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=17_0700

In any case, there’s still a sensor at the oil filter housing on my car. I might just use an infrared thermometer or thermal camera to do a reasonability check on the temp. If that all checks out, any other ideas? I know the DME exercises a fair bit of discretion in what engine temp to target, but I don’t know what informs this (whether it remembers my driving style after ignition off, or if it’s a clean slate each time etc…). BMW’s technical docs describe the various temperatures, but when I’m not driving it still seems odd it would try to hold ~90°. Maybe there’s nothing wrong… Thank you!!
