Steve Dinan (CarBahn) Working on M2 - Claims 750HP by August

Claims SW (tune) and heat exchangers from the G80/82 will be available in the M2 by end of August taking it to 750HP, and all engine mods from G80/G82 available for G87 in 2-3 months. (note that the video was released today, but seems to have been filmed a while back)

Suspension by Spring.

Anyway, he seems pumped about the G87.

I love Steve & don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's still in the business doing what he loves. But a 750 RWHP M2 with just a few mods. Those are great lofty goals & he loves to toss HP figures around. But how are you going to get this RWD G87 M2 to hook with all that added power.

And he called this car a Competition model & said it was lighter than the M3. Both those statements are obviously incorrect. Just my .02 cents.

I was wondering why Carbahn didn’t have a stage 2 tube available for the base M3. And was wondering how that translated over to the M2 if maybe there was some small difference with the engines. Sounds like it’s just that the 6mt can’t handle the stage 2 tune. I am planning getting the stage 1 anyway, glad to hear the auto leaves some headroom for the future

Thinking VERY hard about getting the Tune Package with the auxiliary cooler when I place my order in the next few months.

Dinan has been tuning these cars longer than most of us have been alive.

I understand the statements are wrong but sometimes have to look at the persons track record before jumping on em for it.

The fact that people can get a femtounlock tune via Carbahn for this platform to me is friggin amazing.

A flash and unlock would be great, but at least for the G80 stage 2 package, it looks like it's the Carbahn Performance Comtroller (piggyback tuner) with the heat exchanger.

Curious to see if that's the case going forward. If Carbahn can bench unlock in the US, I wonder if they're flashing it with BM3 or MHD.

So many questions!

Carbahn is offering the femto unlock service.

https://youtu.be/EjMlns1M0WE

There is no bench unlock yet, ecu still has to go to Europe.

If you look at a stage 1 tune for the M3 he has, it gets well above 550hp. So adding some hardware, bigger turbos, intercoolers, meth injection maybe, ethanol etc, I don't see why he can't get close to 750.

The offer both a stage 2 piggyback or a stage 2 flash tune with DME unlock

https://carbahn.com/product/cbs58-06...d-xdrive-2021/

I didnt get a chance to watch the video fully yet, but usually Steve talks in Flywheel HP numbers, and the G80Comp stage 2 is quoted at 754hp on 100oct. I imagine this will be basically the same tune on the G87. If I can get 600+whp and keep a warranty, Idk how I could possibly keep the M2 stock.

He has aged...

I remember meeting him in 1995 when the E36M3 craze was in full swing and I bought a bunch of Dinan stuff for that car.

That was almost 30 years ago so probably the normal human process.

100% traction in first is probably not possible. But that's fine, there are other gears.

So sure, it's never gonna 0-60 in 3.0 secs. But we should see some much improved trap times.

Faster than the F87 M2CS and lighter than the G8x M3/M4. Nothing wrong about that.

Haven’t we all though? I have recently noticed that I have aged a good bit in the past two years and I live a healthy lifestyle full of exercise, and no alcohol/drugs. The last three years have been rather stressful for us all and I suspect that to be a large contributor.

Clearly he misspoke a few times - the video has a correction for the "competition" bit already, but not for the HP figures.

As for weight, the M2 "platform" is indeed lighter than the M4 platform with with similar equipment.

It's just that, in order to protect the M4, and keep the M2's pricing down, BMW did the following to the base US M2 spec:

1 - Made steel roof with sunroof standard on the M2 and carbon fiber on M4. If you spec the carbon roof, you save 48lbs right there. (I specced carrbon)

2 - Made cast 930M wheels standard on the M2 vs "forged" (flow formed) standard on the M4 (824M, 826M, etc). You can save 18-24 lbs if you plop M4 wheels on (I already bought a set of 826M for 18 lbs savings).

3 - BMW use AGM/LeadAcid battery in the M2 and Li-Ion on the M4. You can save ˜38 lbs if you replace the M2's battery with Antigravity for $900.

So, if you do the 3 above ordering/accessory changes to equalize apples to apples, you will find that the M2 is approximately 120 lbs lighter than an equivalent M4.

And anyone who cares about weight will spec/change these things.

So Steve is correct that the M2 platform is lighter than the M4 platform - as it should be.

(P.S. I'm no Dinan fanboy - never bought anything from them. But I'm delighted that we have another tuning company jumping on the M2. It is with competition that we will get better choices)

Great content here fellas. I like talking with people that I can learn things from. I stand corrected that the M2 is actually lighter & that makes more sense. And yes, Steve (just like all of us) are aging. But doing something you love is a greta way to slow down that process. Driving the new M2 will surely bring us lots of joy for a while.

Femto unlock, highflow downpipe, exhaust, intake and colder plugs with stage 2 DME tune gets you ~650whp.
