I don’t use sunroofs often but always option them when buying new as it’s one of the more sought after options for resale value as a lot of people have to have them and it can be a deal breaker. For a car like this that is not as applicable as I would expect the average M-enthusiast would prefer the CF roof.

Had 2 BMWs with sunroofs both rattle and creak and need regular service once a year for lubrication just a huge headache

If you live in places like AZ, NV, FL, etc. with excessive heat and sun throughout the year. Especially during summer months.

Don't park your carbon roof equipped car outside 24/7.

It will not age well over time.

BMWNA decision, pure and simple. I think it stinks too. Best thing anyone can do at this point is voice their dissatisfaction - call or write to them. Automakers (sometimes) listen - after taking a LOT of heat from customers over the shitty new haptic controls on VW steering wheels, they just announced they are going back to the old proper buttons.

I'm not sure who pays $70k+ for a car and parks it outside, but apparently it happens. Even the guy with a proper garage might have to park outside/uncovered at work every day, and here in AZ, that's definitely not good either.

By the amount of Americans that use their garages as storage units, instead of parking vehicles in. This type of neglect doesn't surprise me.

I can confirm this is a Canadian thing as well. Half the 2 or 3 car garages in my circle have multiple vehicles always parked in the driveway because their garage is full of junk and stuff.

As a condo owner, my car spends 100% of its time outside and thinks garages are only where it goes for service. Not everyone lives in a free-standing, single-family home.

If I remember correctly on the F87 it was 1.7in. No one knows on G87. It is going to depend on your height, build, and your seating position for track use. Honestly if you 6ft+ and tend to drive in a more straight up position on track, then get the carbon roof. Nothing is more annoying than hitting bumps on the track and your helmet constantly hitting the roof.

Thank you. I do like to sit pretty straight (I am 5"11"). My E90 does have a moonroof that I love using every chance I get so that I can hear the car and avoid using climate controls (less annoying airflow and noise than side windows for daily driving). The headroom above me is tight and if I would wear a helmet it might contact the sealing.

Any headroom difference between Carbon and Slick Steel top? I would think not but just seeing if someone knows. The plain steel top is standard in Canada and I would consider it to save $.

It can be worse than just contact on bumps. I had an E39 M5 for 15 years, and I had to adjust the seat recline back farther than I wanted while moving the seat forward to regain hand-to-wheel distance, and even then my helmet was in light contact with the roof while sitting still.

It wasn't an option here in the US to order the E39 M5 with a slicktop unfortunately, so I made sure when I bought my E90 M3 to get a slicktop. I have just enough room in that car with a helmet on and haven't ever had a roof contact problem. Same deal when I bought the M2C --had to be a slicktop, and 1.7" is the value I recall also. The F87 has even a bit more headroom than the E90 M3, both slicktops. Note all the above is of course with the seat adjusted down as far as possible.

The E91 we have has a huge "panoramic" sunroof that takes up a large amount of headroom. Not that I'd ever use that car on track/autox, but I can't fit in it with a helmet on without tilting my head to the side. In the back seat of the E91, that huge sunroof invades on headroom such that I can't sit back there without tilting my head to the side or scrunching down in the seat. Fortunately I never need to ride back there. I'm only 6'2" so not crazy tall or anything. And yes, that sunroof rattles (I've remedied all the mechanism rattles but over bumps the window panels still vibrate and rattle), my wife and I never use it, can't stand it, so I'd give anything to have a slicktop on that car too...

A photo of a G42 M240 with the headliner removed and somewhat helps shed a bit of light on what is exactly underneath pertaining to the weight concerns.

Here you will pay millions for a house and still you don't get a garage!
