If all goes as planned wifey can takeover my g42 xdrive with the zf8 (which is a blast to drive by the way) and I'll be whipping the g87 in manual rwd.
Garage with best of both worlds. |

I remember a recent carwow drag race video with a RWD R8 and an AWD M5 comp... how the turntables...
I personally don't think the M2 needs awd but if they offered it for those who want it I wouldn't really care. Like the G80/2, I think the RWD auto configuration becomes the odd one out. The awd-auto be faster and heavier than a RWD manual but with EPS I doubt anyone would really notice any difference in steering "feel" and the added mass at the front. I mean like every other M car these days, most of these are just going to be street driven with a lot of folks doing draggy runs and straight line racing.

No, I am rather indifferent about the whole M division these days, following the general attitude shown by the division as of late regarding customer feedback. I am here only because I am mildly interested in the manual M2.
Sure, some owners may have complained about DCT harshness expecting improvement, but that doesn't mean they can slap a numb, slower transmission and expect people to not express displeasure.

BMW no longer offers a DCT option in any model, even the flagship M4 CSL gets the M Steptronic automatic transmission. It makes no sense for BMW to only put a DCT in the G87 M2. BMW would have to redesign, tool up assembly production, gear up supply chain just for the M2 made in Mexico. It makes no financial sense to offer this, when the ZF8 is the go-to automatic in BMWs model lineup. It’s time to realize the DCT has gone the same way as the Dodo bird.
Unfortunately that is just the way it is, but I don't necessarily agree with BMW. Next up the manual transmission will be gone like the DCT. I would just hate that. |

That was BMW's choice to offer generic products even in their exclusive models and test how far they can go lowballing customers. No one has to accept anything, just gotta move onto a brand that offers what keen drivers appreciate.

I agree with what you have said. My last BMW was in 2009, even though I have been a BMWCCA member for 25 years. I was unhappy with BMW’s direction then and tried many other brands. But here I am with the G42 M240i after trying other cars. There are not a lot of choices out there for sporty cars like these. I really like the M240i, just wish it offered a manual transmission; hence on the wait list for the G87 M2.

Those bicycle tires are very cute, though. Coming from a previous 235 owner here, so no hate - just sayin.

You know, I thought the same thing until I got one of these.
Now that I am used to the open top experience it’s hard to imagine it can be beaten. I AM sad that the G series cars have torque converters, rather a true DCT. Otherwise it could be a good option for a daily.

Would you agree that BMW has an advantage, from the enthusiast perspective, by continuing to offer RWD its smallest M car?
I think of the M2 as the modern equivalent of the older M3, for which AWD wouldn’t have ever been considered. It makes sense, logically, to keep the smallest M car as simple as possible (at least to some people). That’s why we have one, albeit “just” an OG. My honest opinion is that others do AWD better…better off to stick to that which one is truly best at doing, or RWD for BMW in this case.
