Heavy and sluggish feelings after new rim/tires

Asking for experience!

Just upgraded to 8.5/9.5 wheels with 245/40 and 275/35 tires (fk510). After putting them on the car feels heavier meaning when I step on it the motion response is not as snap as it was. Steering also feels heavier. Overall the car gives a heavier and sluggish feeling.

wondering if anyone here had similar experience or might know what’s going on? This is the biggest tire set up i’ve had…not sure if it was the tires or something else that could be causing a force of resistance.

Thanks in advance!

what wheels did you upgrade to? you might be feeling the extra weight of the wheels if you bought some cheap ones (extra rotating mass affects your performance)

When I went to Apex forged wheels I noticed a major difference for the better.

But the weight is actually on par with my stockies tho. Tires are supposed to be better since it’s summer performance tire 🫠

What’s the weight difference between old and new tires though?

Front Suspension

I cannot be certain, but you may have changed some of the alignment specs, particularly toe and camber. Also, do the new tires have a greater circumference than the originals? I've always thought that wider and bigger front tires tend to make the steering feel somewhat heavier.

How does the "turn-in" feel?

I'm certainly no suspension expert, so hopefully somebody better can give you a better idea.

You are right. The circumference did increase. It was 225/40 stock ans now it's 245/40 with rear being 275/35.

As the steering is feeling heavier, similarly, the turn in became less snappy I would say.

Thanks for the input!

Different rubber manufacturer? new tires? Give them 500 miles of wear and they should feel better.

You didn’t upgrade anything you just downgraded

I’m not sure what you were thinking about the stock wheels are way better.

Different tire compounds have different feel, and also, all things equal a wider front tire will usually result in a more "sluggish" feeling as it takes a bit more effort to turn.

Thanks! What made me worry was that I only went up to 245, which is the stock width for the cars with ZTK. The difference I'm getting is just too big

Not only did you get (slightly) heavier with your wheels and especially your larger tires, but you grew in circumference in the rear by nearly 2.5%. Tire size can be looked at like gearing, and you just made your gearing taller, which may help a little on the top end, but makes acceleration slower. This also effects your suspension with an increase in unsprung weight, thus making your suspension react slower to irregularities on the road.

Personally, I wouldn't think so. For me I'm 1.2% taller in the back (265 vs 255), but my wheels are significantly lighter (19.1 lbs). I noticed a slight increase in acceleration and much better road manners.

Don't guess you ever timed any events with your original setup to compare to now? Could be a placebo.

One way to get "2nd-hand" opinion on a car you've grown use to is give it gas...or stomp on the brake...with your left foot. You have no muscle memory doing this, so it will feel completely foreign. Just make sure no one is behind you when stomping on the brake!
