I have a 08 e92 335xi and I was having a spirited drive the other day when I blew up what I assume is my transfer case. Car will still shift gears but won’t move and won’t stay still when in park. I don’t think a whole transfer case should destroy gears with 96k miles on the clock without some previous issues. However, I do know that my car has a staggered wheel setup and is AWD. I never thought anything of this but could this be the culprit to why it did this? I also had done a new set of coilovers a week prior. Is it possible that the staggered wheels or the coilovers can cause premature wear on the AWD system? I can never find a straight answer. Another question is when I go to fix this, is it possible I can do a full xdrive delete and run a driveline to the rear and not one to the front? Maybe negate the cost of another transfer case? All of these are very specific questions so I’m hoping one of you guys can give me some answers. Thank you!

What tire sizes are you running?

The front is 235/40/18 and the rear is 265/35/18.

Interested to know what you find out. I would love to convert mine but I’m going to guess if the cost was about the same a lot of folks would have already done it.

Just got news back from the shop. Turns out I blew an axle and not a transmission which is a HUGE relief. I thought I blew the trans because it was grinding into park/reverse. Turns out it’s because there’s no brakes applied to that axle to get it to stop moving. Duh. Moral of the story: don’t make your rear coilovers too low. Even if it looks good.

Axels break , I don't think it has anything to do with your coilovers as long as your alignment is correct. It's also fine to run a staggered set up on a x drive as long as the front and rear wheel circumference are within 1% of each other ( which yours are).
I drive a xi (for 6 years now) slammed on ST coilovers and running 235 35 19 front and 275 30 19 rear.

You can make your car rwd with software called X-delete. It's pretty much a transfer case tune. It keeps the center clutches open so only power goes to the rear. They also have some presets or a custom slider if you want just some power going to the front but mostly the rear. It has great reviews.
