finally have too much power for my clutch!

Well i finally got to the point where my clutch cant take it anymore. all it took was FBO, JB4 G5 ISO, Pure stage 1 turbo and Meth hahaha. i was driving up a curvy steep hill and when i came around one of the corners i noticed my rpms rasing up quick but to my suprise no tire squelling like normal then the dreaded burnt up clutch smell... limped it up the hill and got it home. tried driving it again and it felt strong. gave it one WOT and right back to slipping. i turned my jb4 to map 4 and drive it like a grandpa now, it gets me where i need to go just fine. i can even do freeway speeds no problem.

but now on to it, i am going to buy a upgraded clutch. decided to go with ACT since all i hear is good things from them. but what my question is with all my mods what one should i go with? the regular one piece clutch or the one with 6 or 4 pucks? i do daily drive this so i dont want it to be to annoying to drive around. but i also want it to be able to handle the power i put down.

also has anyone on this forum replaced a clutch in one of the n55's yet? it seems fairly straight forward so i am planning on doing it myself. thanks for any input you have.

With act clutches Ive always liked the heavy duty pressure plate with 6 puck sprung. HDG6 is ACTs number for that combo.

It held 500whp in my evo for years.

I didn't know ACT made clucthes for the n55 yet. Where are you seeing one?

the same clutches that go in the N54 work in the N55 as well

I went with clutch masters FX350 non Kevlar disc. Went with them because i know they make good clutches and the fact that they also sell a single-mass lw flywheel as well. So got the whole package sent out to me at the same time

As far as how its worked for me. Im also FBO stage 1 turbo and i do alot alot alot of NLS when i race lol and its holding just fine

I have a motiv clutch in the mail. Includes flywheel. Try one of those. Minimal chatter, 900-1000 hp capacity

I wish motiv had completed their clutch setup before i bought the clutch masters one. Would have def went that route.

Let us know how it does Daily driving though.

Motiv clutch and flywheel combo is like $2k, no? What about going with the factory 335is clutch. It can handle oodles of torque.

i was looking at top gear solutions web site. they have a bunch of different options on there.

Hey guys! sorry about not posting much on this thread. i started one on the N54 board since we share the same clutch and thier board will have a lot more people experinced with the R&R of the clutch. i am thinking about making a DIY for the clutch replacement, you think the majority would like video or pics with step by step instructions?

how do you like the single mass flywheel? and when you say you have a lw are you refering to light weight ie aluminum?

$1750 with flywheel. The cheaper clutches are just clutch. Add a fly wheel which it probably should have and it's only a couple hundred more but less chatter, more power holding, etc.

Jeff a good guy bit I wanted this clutch because I hate chatter and want to minimize it. Those are good clutches too. The motiv one is made by spec but only sold through motiv/PTF.

I don't think its different forms the 335i clutch. 550i has more holding power, oem quiet and reliability and feel, and similar cost to 335i one.

Lightweight flywheels are good and bad. Good for acceleration but bad for launch. The mass of a steel has more kick when you let the clutch fly. Also light weight, aluminum, and single mass all add a lot of noise. I hate noise. Dual mass have to plates joined by a dampening layer to lower noise. The advantage or single mass is you can resurface instead of having to replace. I don't need that. I'd rather have a quiet trans and steel dual mass than a trans that sounds like a bucket of bolts someone is shaking. I had that before on a corvette. Never again. Annoying and embarrassing.

From what I've been reading around on e90post, is that the 550i clutch is the same as the 335is clutch which is not the same one as the 335i clutch. Gonna try it out and see what it can do.

Also looking for a upgraded clutch since my OEM one is starting to let go with 460 torques. Debating on the 550i clutch or going with a aftermarket clutch.
