Speaker recs for hifi system PP86DSP amp?

Hey guys,

I have the hifi system and as you know it's awful. I got a Bimmertech PP86DSP amp a while ago with their tune and I'm not impressed with it at all. I've toyed with doing a Logic7 retrofit (LOVED my L7 with BavSound speakers in my 07) but it looks like a TON of work.

I blew one of my subs today so I want to upgrade all speakers and underseat subs before committing to the L7 retrofit. Maybe that's what the amp needs to actually sound good.

Anyone have any recommendations? I've looked through all of the master audio threads many times but most of those speakers have been discontinued by now.

What's the go to setup these days? My initial thoughts were to get the BavSound stage 1 + SWS8 subs (partially because I still see myself going to L7 and I loved this combo in my old car).

I know there are better setups than what I had before, but my goals are to achieve a similar sound. Not to win competitions, but something that's enjoyable to listen to. The improvement with the amp alone was very marginal and not at all worth the money IMO but hopefully the blown sub forcing my hand will get me some better results.

Open to any suggestions but not looking to spend more than the BavSound + SWS would cost. Or possibly EPS speakers + SWS?

BMW EPS speakers are what I have - paired with the PP82 DSP. Very clear, detailed, perhaps a hair too bright (but that can be dialed in with tuning).

Highly recommend.

I have pp86dsp with eps door speakers but the original Hi-Fi subs. I loaded a few tune files from the f30 forum thread and settled on my favourite.
I’m not that impressed to be honest. It’s a fair improvement from Hi-Fi but doesn’t really impress me for the price of the amp and used eps speakers.
My old e36 with bav sound speakers and the HK amp - that was really amazing.

Maybe the Hi-Fi subs are the weak link in my system….

The thing about the older e46 and maybe the older ones is bmw didn't
cheap out on the stereo then. You had some decent sized door speakers
not the 4 inchers.
I have morels in the doors and jehnerts in the floors and a Jl 600/6 and it's
amazing. Hi Fi system to start with.

the stock hi fi speaker's are all crap .
When I installed the system I have I did it in pieces an after the amp put in the
doors and ran with the stock floors. at the underseat step I could actually hear
them when there was little evidence they were doing anything with the stock
amp . However they were very muddy without that much output . The Jehnerts
are really audiophile speakers with extreme accuracy presence and range. Not
bass head speakers though . Jehnert Xe 200's

Almost anything would be better than the Hi Fi subs.

why don’t you fit logic7 speakers with the match amp? best of both world. no retrofit hassle (replacing speakers is fairly easy as you know)

Plugging in speakers with and adapter is no more difficult than setting up
home entertainment speakers . The only thing you have to be aware of
is the total thickness of the speaker . The e92 and E93 have thinner doors
so the choices are more limited.

Try my tune file and go from there - it's adapted for one meant for an E90, and I've adjusted it to suit the EPS speakers and my ears.

To get the most out of these aftermarket amp/dsp's
you should learn to tune the DSP.

Although the stock speakers in my Hi Fi sound system sounded much better
with the JL600/6 there is no comparison to the way the Jl sounded with morels
and jehnerts . It was like underseats farting to becoming audiophile speakers.

Thank you so much for the file Hoody I’ll give it a go and report back!
And thank you for the speaker recommendation ctuna, I think that will be my next step.
The e36 footwell speakers were 5.25” and then there was bass 6x9” on the rear parcel shelf for bass.
So you’re right, in the e90 the underfloor subs do the job of both the the footwell speakers and the rear 6x9s - so pretty important!

The trend is for most car company's to really cheap out on car stereo.
The move to 4 inch speakers and surround sound was a big hit to
Hi Fi(sound) . They put a endorsement name on but it's only a name not backed
by actually good hardware.

Some of these systems are downright offensive and hurt you ears and your
well being . Like scratching a chalk board and rattling cans at the same time.

I was pretty happy with the HK system in my E46 .
It didn't make me want to change it at all.
Did have to go in a bunch of times for subwoofer rattle though.
