TBH, the smoke doesnt matter a shit when you've got 550hp :P

Its a fundimental part of tuning a diesel. If theres no smoke, theres power left on the table.

And its also a nice reminder to the car you've just smoked, that they've just been done over by a diesel :P

Saw the video a week back on the US side. Think he's running nitrous... http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1148709

The 335d engine never ceases to amaze me. So much potential. I can't even imagine that power, probably scary as f**k! For some reason the Eastern Europeans really tune their cars hard, and usually the first ones to do it.

I know the gearbox is the main limiting factor, but Steve maybe you could help. There are some ZF auto gearboxes which are rated a lot higher (i think around 600lb.ft), and i think some of them are in the 7 series?

The thing with the gearbox is everyone obsesses about not exceeding some torque specification set down by ZF.

It makes sense, because these are relatively new cars, parts are expensive and you dont really want to go blowing up the gearbox after sticking a basic flash map on your daily driver...

However when you start tuning any car properly, beyond the basic flash maps and mild hybrid turbo upgrades, you find that your pushing everything so hard anyway, that the stated gearbox torque limit goes out the window. You instead simply wind it up and see what breaks. Many manufacturers transmissions have no stated torque limit at all, but that doesnt mean there isnt one, instead folk just tune them up until things start breaking and you find where the limit really is.

In older, well established tuning scenes, say Subarus or Evo's or Ford Cosworths or whatever, people will have figured out, thru trial and error where the real limits lie.

If ZF state maximum torque is 500nm, you can be pretty sure theres a decent safety margin built into that, as they'll expect it to handle that for 100's of thousands of miles. Stick 700nm thru it and it may well be perfectly fine, it just wont last as long. Or it might explode :P You find out by sticking 700nm thru it and seeing what happens!

He's running 475hp without nos, and that's still a decent figure.

Let me make sure I've got this....You basically keep spending money on your car to extract ever increasing amounts of horsepower until it breaks, at which point you spend money on buying stronger parts?

I've been running 600+ ft lbs for around 2 years now.. and the car is used daily. The gearbox is much more capable than the internet makes out

Impressive figures, would be nice to see a list of mods!

Needs more boost to reduce the soot

Nice figures though.

That diesel with those Toyo tyres in the wet and that torque though. Watch out.

What do you think someone making 550hp from a 335d has done?

Thats right, they've kept turning it up.

If they stuck to the internets "OMG you cant exceed Y torque value because the gearbox isnt rated for any more" then they wouldnt have achieved 550hp would they...

My point was that IF you decide to go that extreme, way beyond the usual "oh lets stick a remap on it" what else can you do other than turn it up and see what breaks? You could strip the engine down and rebuild it all with forged parts, but thats a waste of money if the stock parts will do 600hp and you only want 500. But if you dont know what the stock parts will do, because no-ones gone there before, your going to be the one to find the limits arent you!

The E90 tuning scene seems to be full of people who see the ZF torque rating as some NEVER EXCEED value. However someone tuning a car to nearly twice the factory output isnt going to see a torque limit on paper and then refuse to go any futher lest they break the gearbox are they!
