Taxing a new car question

i have just picked up my new car and went online to tax it, however its saying i need to pay from 1st October ! This seems a bit of a rip off as i need to pay for the full months tax even though i bought the car on the 29th plus the previous owner won't get refunded for October as they sold it within the month so its not 1 full month. My question is can i wait until Sunday to tax so that us into November ?

Just wait until the 1st.
The DVLA won't know it's changed ownership until they get the V5 so as far as they and the police are concerned it's still taxed.

I bought my 335 on the 27th of Feb and waited till the 1st of March to tax it, fo the exact same reasons above. That included driving it over 150miles home.

That's down to whether you're confident driving around for two days without tax, I've driven around before without tax for a couple months without noticing so if it was me I'd drive as little as possible and wait until Sunday - remembering that it is an offence!

Its a fking scam! If you do it the way your meant to, the original owner wont get a refund for the month and yet you would pay tax again for a car that already has tax???

It works out for my mate who's a trader. He buys cars at the beginning on the month, taxes them online but they don't take the payment for a couple weeks so as long as he sells it before they take the payment he gets free road tax.

They should have just kept the old system but made everything electronic. So you get your tax disc emailed over which you can then give to the new owner OR refund the difference when you sell.

Its annoying that we just have to live with this shitty system.

Yeah it is a scam but as above you can technically get away with it for a couple of days.

Bear I'm mind the reason why you no longer need a tax disc. Big brother, in the form of camera number plate recognition readers, are scanning you car on most major roads and if your car is not on the data base with valid tax you will get a letter in the post.

Which is why it will be fine for a couple of days.

Like I said it will still register as taxed until the dvla process the V5 which depending on how fast the seller, post or dvla are could be anywhere up to 6 weeks

Yes the government is ripping us off to the tune of millions. Is quite possible to tax cars by the day and give you a fee from the day you buy the car - its what computers do very well. But no, the government wants whole months and makes a packet from the overlap.
A friend bought a TVR and had about 6 days left in the month so he left it. Didnt drive the car that week but when he went to tax it the discrepancy came to light and he was told that as he hadnt put it on a SORN he had committed an offence and would be prosecuted. However if he paid up for the previous month they would see it as an oversight and let it go.
