335i brakes on 328i

So I see a few people before me have posted this but with no real definte answer.

So the question was will 335i brakes fit on a 328i.

The answer is absolutely and with no headache at all. The only thing I needed to change was the caliper(w/caliper bracket),rotor, and pads obviously. Some people thought you needed to change the hub or shocks or w.e and that this wouldn't be a cheap upgrade.

I got the calipers with the brackets used on ebay for 175 shipped. and the pads and rotors for $131.

You can use the old wear sensor if it's not melted on to the old pads and you can use the same brake hose.*

* I have SS lines therefor I'm not 100% sure if the OEM will be long enough but they should be honestly.

I didn't do the rears because I actually just put new rotors and pads on them not to long ago and there's an ebrake issue with the rear I don't want to deal with the front is pretty much plug and play

rears require hand brake shoe mods unless you have large hand brake shoes on your Knuckle.

Huh? Pretty sure there has been a definite answer for a while.

The front calipers are direct bolt on, there's never been a question about that.

The problem lies in the rear. The 335i uses a larger parking brake so if you swap in the 335i rear brakes on a 328i, you will lose your parking brake. You will either have to modify the shoes by basically making a hybrid between the 328i and 335i parking brake shoes, or swap in the larger 335i parking brake mechanism, which requires changing to the 335i wheel carrier as well.

This is only a problem with RWD E90 325i/328i and RWD E92 328i. The 330i, E91, E93, and all AWD models all use the larger rear parking brake, so you can direct swap the 335i rear brakes on those cars and still have functional parking brakes without modification.

.
This is correct but there is a hybrid solution too:
335i brake shoes, with a corner welded from a 328i shoes. The shoes sit on 335i backing micro plate that holds the shoe pivot point for the 335i hand brake shoes. this fits over current 328i micro plate mountingn points in the rear, at worst a hole in the 335i plate will be made that does not impact operation

BTW this micro plate rusts and it is why your hand brakes squeak when parked

So the result of this hybrid is - less welding costs, no need for bearing/knuckles/carrier, no hand break squeak until it rusts again

Well I didn't find a definite answer so I figured I'd share. But I don't think it's all that necessary to do the rears what do you all think?

You should be fine since the studs screw onto the wheel hub. The holes in the rotors aren't threaded.

Cool, I've had 335 front calipers sitting in my garage for the past few months and lazy to rebuild and retrofit.

Yes, since you have an E91, it should have the larger parking brakes that fit in the 335i rear rotors.

Used search and came up with this thread. I have a 2008 e90. Does it matter what year 335 front calipers are used?

Yes, BUT...WONT FIT UNDER MOST STOCK WHEELS

and most not-335i/d specific wheels will be TOO wide (wheel) or with perfectly good but utterly unuseable too-tall tires (for takeoffs, everyones cheapo goto solution)

As to most M3 wheels and many 19's, might rub without further mods...20s? SOL not on a stock 335 you dont (and afaik a 328 with 335 brakes is for all wheel fitment purposes now a stock 335)

Unless your wheels just happen to be ready for em (most of the 17s and all of the 16s are NOT), those brakes will hurt the average buyers pocketbook... A LOT

New wheels new tires? Ouch ouch ouch... e46 m3 takeoffs? Ouch ouch. Superplain worst of the worst option 335i stock wheels that somebody took off due to frustration with looks and or runflat hatred? 1) ughh, 2) still surprosingly expensive, 3) major pain cause most such sellers dont bother with things like tire iszes, never heard of offsets, etc

PS and if youve never had the pleasure, non-bmw/non-replica wheels simply wont bolt on, so thrifty bmw wheel shoppers are highly limited in options

Your post is a bit confusing. Most Oem e90 17" wheels will fit over 335i brakes.

All 17" and bigger non-M OEM E9x wheels are 100% compatible and interchangeable between all body styles and engine options.

Only the 16" OEM E9x wheels will not fit over the 330i or 335i/d brakes.

Thought so too...

In theory not in practice.

Just wasted a LOOOOT of time on a cheap wheel wild goose chase.... ended up with 640i 18"s w/offset 30 and called it close enough, after LOADS of 328i takeoffs turned out to be utterly unsuitable

Measure those things across, and dont forget to CENTER the measurements on the middle of the hub... you need over 16 inches inside diameter, and most BMW 17's do NOT provide that... a lot of the basic designs have 15-15.5" space inside

As to 18s and 19s pretty much all clear, and 20s pretty much all dont fit for other reasons

About to do this mod on my e92 328i. With this mod does it improve braking or is it just cosmetic? Also, just to make sure I just need stock rotors, calipers (do I need to buy 335i caliper bracket or can I use my 328i) and pads to complete this? Please lmk
