High pitched whine noise cold start

Here’s a video of another guy who has the same issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/BMW/s/HXXCVXzEe7

I started my car this morning and heard that whine and was wondering what it was and most importantly, if it’s normal. Seems to only happen on cold start, but I don’t really remember it happening before.

I'm assuming you are not talking about the starter motor crank.

It is very common for M engines, new or old, to make this noise especially when it is cold outside. I suspect it's a combination of increased vibration from the reinforced engine mounts and chassis, and louder injectors and secondary air pump due to the colder weather.

Yeah I’m talking about when the engine fires up, there’s a whine sound. So it’s normal?

I had this once or twice, it didnt seem to cause anything and it went away immediately after start so I assume not much to worry about unless its every cold start.

Same. Nothing to worry about. Belts turning and turbos winding.

Asked a friend, he says it could be due to our ACs starting up as soon as we turn the car on? Either way I don't think it's a big issue

Easy enough to eliminate the A/C. Turn it off before engine start.

Sounds like normal accessory drive noise. But if the A/C is on the additional load the compressor places on the accessory drive could make the noise worse.

Same here, every cold start after letting the car sit overnight and it makes this noise. As long as everyone else has it I'm not worried lol

The AC doesn't turn on when you unlock the car/turn on the ignition, it does it upon starting the engine automatically. Is there an option in iDrive to turn this off?

If the A/C compressor is left on when the car is parked and the engine shut off the A/C compressor is on as soon as the engine starts.

But I don't leave the A/C compressor on. My SOP is to a few minutes before reaching my final destination of the day I use the climate control button to call up the climate control screen and slide the A/C compressor to OFF.

Upon the next use of the car I start the engine and if A/C is needed turn on the A/C compressor via the same climate control button/screen.

I also turn off the ac before turning off my car, yet it turns back on automatically.

Yes.
Get in the car, push the start button three times without stepping on the clutch or brake pedal.

Your fan will start. Assess noise.

Enter the climate menu and turn off the climate functions. Your fan should stop.

Is the “turn off climate functions” option the key to making the car not turn on the AC automatically? I’m leaving in about an hour so I’ll report back if I hear the noise with this option checked.

That’ll turn off the whole system (which includes the AC compressor).
If you want the fan to continue, I believe there’s an option to turn off just the AC and keep the fan on.

So do I have to manually turn on the AC every time I want it on?

And no, I don’t want the fan on, I want the whole system to not turn on automatically upon start up and would prefer for it to turn on when I actually want it to lmao

As you mentioned, the ac will always be turned on when you turn the car on.
I was describing steps to turn it off so you can assess the noise in different circumstances to determine where your noise comes from.

Yeah I’m going to try your specific method out later when I leave.

I’m just wondering why it starts the fan automatically in the G chassis, this didn’t happen on the F chassis

BMW automated everything in this car. Headlights, climate, heated seats. It’s annoying but it is what it is…

I forgot to click the turn off climate functions button when I started the car so I'll try again tomorrow

Kind of bummed you can't turn off the lights while the car is in motion. Not that I'd need to but I just think going "ghost" looks kind of cool when recording a roller lol

That's not behavior I recall seeing. My M2 is a 2023 model. Your M2 is a 2024. Could be this behavior is "new" with 2024 model?
