155 mph limiter?

Hello,

I hope to soon be an owner of a ZB G87! However, my build is finalized and I'm curious about the 155 mph limiter... I refuse to pay $2500 package to increase the speed limiter. Is there a way to remove/increase the limit without paying for the "driver package" from BMW? Any warranty concerns if I do this?

Thanks!

You probably have to pay to unlock the ECU and then tune.

Correct...and does one really need to be able to go above 160mph?

I was going to add this option and was on the fence similarly about getting it vs tuning aftermarket via femto or whatever it's called...

ultimately everyone is right, unless you're drag racing regularly you're never going to be going over 155.. not to mention it's dangerous as helll

waste of money all around - tune or package

Doesn't the $2500 option just raise the limiter, but still have a limiter?

It would be interesting to see what top end would be without any limit.

Not on public roads, but this is for track and drag strip. I also don’t want to do a complete tune/flash as to void warranty.

You realize its just allowing for higher top end speed...no change in tune/parameters/setting on the ecu compared to someone else who didn't get the package with respectto low end torque, power band, shift points, etc. For that, you will need an ecu unlock tune.

Tell me, you really think it will give you any benefit on a 1/8 or 1/4 mi dragstrip?

And unless you are running the oval at Daytona, Indy or other similar super speedways, when do you think that added top end will come into play.

Guess its helpful if you are going to the salt flats.

I don't think anyone wanted to pay for the increased top speed but its not 2500 for that - you got a trip to bmw's performance school to drive on their track with an instructor - I'm looking forward to that way more than the 177mph ill never reach (nor the 155 for that matter).

I think you should ask yourself what it is that you really want, because I don't understand lol.

You don't want to drive on a track, you don't want carbon buckets, nor a carbon roof - you just want to hit 177? lol

I have it on my HEA and they contacted me about the track day.

I understand all your points. But isn’t America a free country? Why is everyone being so judgmental and quick to disapprove what I want? I’m simply asking a question to see if it can be done and how. If it requires a whole reflash, then that’s all I need to know. I am not trying to offend anyone here. Have a great day!

Thanks,
FS

Obviously it’s not a question of need, Rob.

Do we need to go over 85?

I saw 147 at Watkins Glen in my stock M4CX and I was not going WFO through 2, 3 and 4.

So I’m glad I’m getting the Drivers Package with the higher speed limiter.

I was able to do some more research and it seems like the DME would need to be unlocked by FEMTO (have to physically mail it to them). Then can flash with something like MHD. Just FYI for those also interested.

You also get a track experience for that $2500. I probably won't tune and paid for it out of the sense that if I sell later, someone might want it.

IIRC Jackie Ding hit 156 on a straight in a Gridlife race.

Anyway, I agree that people are being weirdly judgey about this. If you wanna go fast, you are a grown ass adult and make your own life choices.

It's not my place to get in your face about it. Of course, if I see you going 150 in my town I'm reporting your plates to the cops. That's ALSO part of being a grown ass adult.

Absolutely agree with you—I wouldn’t blame you for calling police on me lol

I’ve also been following Jackie Ding. He’s doing some pretty awesome stuff with the G87!

You need to update Sammy Hagar’s song to “I can’t drive 155”

To the actual OP's post, it may be worth paying the 2500.

It's pricey, but warranty hassles are less likely if something goes wrong at high speed. It also won't hurt resale value, at worst.

Of course, if you plan on modding the crap out of the car anyway and FEMTOing it, upping boost, etc, then you don't care about your warranty anyway.

Im in the same boat as some others, if you want it, get it. I thought I wanted it just to "know" I had the higher limiter, I also wanted to do the track day and receive my car from the manufacturing facility, but then talked myself out of it. Track day can be bought without the limiter for less than the cost, id never need the faster top end, and ended up not wanting to drive the car home 1300 miles without PPF on it.

Well I experienced the speed limiter on the track yesterday. I was a bit surprised when the car laid over about 200ft before my brake point. A quick search and here I am resurrecting this thread.

I didn't realize 155mph was the std limiter on the M2. Personally, I'm glad I didn't have the driver package as I am now motivated to unlock the DME and put in a tune.

FWIW, my tires are slightly shorter. GPS showed a max speed of 152. Last time on the track it showed 154 with the stock tires. I was probably just touching the limiter right at my brake point.
