Mediocre Gas Mileage

2011 335D 53K. Just purchased from CarMax with extended warranty. The car runs fine but it seems like a little bit of a pig off the line, although it will get up and go if you stab it. Secondly is my combined mileage with allot of highway is around 22.

Anything common on these besides below to check?

I have checked the following.
Thermostat is normal at 88C/190F
DPF pressure is reporting normal (BMWhat)

Thanks,
Kaine

Very horrible fuel mileage. I average 28-30 with mostly highway. Does it idle somewhat rough? That is about the right miles for the Carbon Build Up issue going around.

If you are driving < 80 MPH a lot on HWY, you should be over 30 MPG.

70-75 cruising yields 35+.

If its very much slow down low then gets going, do you have a problem with the low RPM turbo (would think a code would be tossed but not sure if that triggers a MAP warning for low pressure). 400 ft-lbs is available pretty quickly then peters out at 4K.

CBU seems a next thing to check on the list if no obvious codes...

Long trips under 80 with no a/c no wind no hills expect 38-40, although the time of year has something to do with fuel blend etc.

Are you hand calculating mpg? These on board computers can be off. I know mine was until I edited the multiplication factors to assign corrections.

As others have said, sounds like CBU. Being a pig off the line may just be turbo lag. A clean engine under ideal conditions (warm but no AC, windows closed, level ground, highway driving, not exceeding 65-70 MPH) should yield over 40 MPG (I've achieved 42).

53K miles is exactly when I had the CBU treatment on my 2011 as well. Until it set an SES, the ONLY symptom was reduced MPG.

This might seem harsh...

Start crying now. It will save you some time down the road. Your CarMax warranty is most likely useless.

The CPO warranty is known to cover CBU now, but only if you have a CEL. The average mileage I have been seeing on this board is about 40-60k. Mine happened at 73k miles.

Kaine,

Bimmer Performance just did a CBU cleaning on my car last week at 43k miles. I did it as a preventative measure, no CEL, the amount of gunk in there was quite impressive. You can get them to check the levels of CBU for you and see if they can trigger the codes for you to get your warranty to cover the cleaning.

In the neighborhood of $1500 at an HONEST dealer. Dishonest dealer will try and get $3K+. It's not a repair, it's more of a cleaning.

It will not happen to all 335Ds, but will for most of them. Many more than once in a 200K mile lifetime. If you rarely take short trips and are typically driving at highway speeds and not around town, it may not happen to you. Of course this is presuming you had the car from new.

There's a thread floating around somewhere. I believe only a few are past the 100k mark, and me being pretty close to that.

I've had less than stellar MPG, as well, as one can see in my sig....although, most of my driving has been city.

OP will need to throw codes for CarMax to foot the CBU cleaning bill but their warranty is far from useless.

+1. Just got mine done last week and I only had to pay a $50 deductible.

Now I need to have a little talk with Offset Motorwerks and see why I had to get another CBU cleaning from the stealership when they already did one for me no less than two months ago!

What dealership did the cleaning and how much did they charge? Did the symptoms go away?

Century West BMW in Hollywood. Again, they only charged me the $50 deductible since my extended (non-maintenance) warranty covers it now apparently. I got a strange toasty odor in the first mile but went away. I also got a slight vibration during idle and some shaking during acceleration from a stop but started to go away the more I drove it.

Was your CEL on when you brought it in?

I'm also averaging around 25mpg (hand calc) with mostly highway driving. Albeit most of that highway driving can be stop and go. I have a 2011 335d CPO with 53,000 miles on it; no CEL.
