The Mishimoto appears to have larger openings, and you don't really need the rest of the "skid plate" unless you're taking the M2 off-roading. If you run over anything large enough to damage the ZunSport screen and oil cooler, you're going to have a lot more damage up front first.

I will take a look at mine tomorrow and see how that part looks.

If you compare to the pics on p.1 posted by BMR.WRLD, that does look like damage on OP's care behind the cooler.

Does the M2 not monitor oil level in real-time? One would expect the low oil level alarm would come in long before the low oil pressure alert.

If you want you can add a $20 mesh from amazon on top of that skid plate for those little pebbles, should be enough protection from everything.
There's already been a handful of these type of accidents in the m3 forum, but they were quick enough to turn the engine off before any serious damage occurred. This will definitely happen more often.

Here's my dinky little mesh.

aight I'm still hesitant on putting on front aftermarket grills but this definitely made me wary enough to throw down on the under grills from Zunsport...

Something doesn't add up. Sure, the cooler is damaged and leaking. But - there is no oil slick underneath the car or any indication that oil was flowing out while underway. So the oil did not exit the engine while driving. Which means that the oil leaked out while parked.

Which means two things -- (1) there would have been a massive oil slick under the car while parked, which should have been obvious and (2) low oil warnings as soon as the car was started, not miles down the road.

What am I missing here?

Absolute nightmare. I've driven F80/F82 cars almost exclusively for like 7 years now, including may long trips between Miami and St. Louis and never had an issue (our oil cooler is setup much the same way). This poor guy buys a brand new car and has the issue/motor destruction on the first day, what horrible luck.

So sorry OP, I hope everything is remedied to your satisfaction quickly but I have a feeling you're going to have a fight on your hands whichever route you go. Good luck!

I haven't been that eager to look at my G87's underbody, but I will check if the 6MT version is exposed like that. AFAIK, 6MT comes with extra mesh around the radiators unlike the ZF8 version.

OP’s car is a manual.

All (F80/82/87/G80/82/83/87) are the exact same way.

The front radiator comes with a mesh inside, unlike the ZF8 for sure. I didn't know about the underbody one.

Well, you said you were going to look at the underside later, that’s what I was responding to. You’re looking it at it because a) it’s a manual and b) it’s the same in every car.

how do I approach BMW NA to look into this issue? Is there any way they are going to own up to their poor design? What are the chances I replace the motor and the same thing happens again while going to my home from the dealership? Looking at the size of the hole, it is a 1/8", I am pretty sure there are 1000s of small rocks on the road that can cause the same damage over and again!

Also people who ask to pull over right away- unless the driver has perceived that something hit underneath which in the case of a small rock we won't, it is not worth risking your life on tight or no shoulders, so one shoud atleast be able to drive 0.5miles from the low pressure warning to a safe place which is what I did.
That sucks dude. Hope it’s fixed up soon. Mishomoto skid plates about to fly off the shelves. There’s no reason anyone with these cars shouldn’t have one, and you should absolutely raise hell with BMW corporate.

There is oil all over the mid pipe, diff cooler fins, drive shaft, and exhaust. I could only smell the oil burning after I stopped the car.

The Turner Motor Sports skid plate protects the entire bay (see pic) unlike the Mishimoto and based on all posts here and other threads, a much better, albeit a bit more expensive, option. IMO
