Velocity Stacks: Before You Buy

Currently I’m one of the beta testers for the 22RPD velocity stacks.
for anyone interesting in purchasing these when they release here are some things to keep in mind.

Air filter - final production will have panel filter, similar to their v10 trumpets s85. Currently beta users are using a k&n prefilter

N54 Airduct - more cold air directed at the velocity stacks

DIY dinan hose - more cold high pressure air that can get into the engine bay

Vacuum hard line - replace that hard line hose with vibrant 20425

Power steering resovour - relocation to lower location can improve cold air flow in the engine Bay Area.

Even with stock air duct and the diy dinan (3 inch) while driving 1-2 degrees above ambient, will go up in stop and go traffic will less travel speed.

Plastic valve cover: will probably need a hose (3/4 fuel/pcv) to connect from top of cover to the “Vapor chamber” seen in their final design.

Magnesium cover: n54 catch can kit, with the 3/4 pcv/fuel hose, connected to the “Vapor chamber”

Runs off of the primary o2 sensors, MAP and a intake air temp sensor (should be provided in kit) so if a part fails, you most likely won’t be able to drive the car in comparison to stock tune where it could run off different safety modes.

A proper cowl install has kept the water off the trumpets even in extreme rainfall.

If there is any questions I will try myself to best answer them

A quick pull on the highway, the intake sounds are beautiful. You could make music with the differences in tone in throttle position.

I mean it fits and locks in well with the air duct notches to keep that in place.

This is awesome. The N54 duct is quite clever. Where can we find more info about the final design? Curious about the vapor chamber - is it just an oil catch can?

https://22rpd.com/blog/the-future-of...esting-sign-up

Vapor chamber like a tuber at the base that allows the catch can to vent into each cylinder pretty equally

Aside from what was shown back in dec/january there hasn't been any new news about the final design. For the beta I am running an oil catch can which vents to atmosphere and the evap line that runs to/from the junction box has been routed to cylinder 4 on the stacks using a quick connect and aluminum hose.

Brown is stage 1 tune 3IM with afe airbox and aftermarket muffler

edit: exhaust choaks up the high end.

Thanks for posting up all this info chilledn52 . Did 22RPD tell you what they printed the trumpets out of? Do you know if the final version will be printed? I just wonder about the long term heat cycling exposure of a printed plastic material.

for beta testing it will be plastic, its a nylon blend not sure of what specifically. final production will most likely CNC or similar. I know it aint finalized yet of what specifically.

How do you find the velocity stacks versus the N54 manifold and set up you have in your signature? Do you have a dyno of the old set up versus the velocity stacks? Will you keep the velocity stacks once the beta testing is finished?

When the velocity stacks were first announced I wondered why anyone would want them...OEM fail safes being bypassed and hot air being sucked into the engine. I have to say the more I see of them the more impressed and curious I am about them.

I wonder if the velocity stacks make more power than an optimised runner length manifold, larger throttle body, larger diameter MAF and intake like BDS are developing? I doubt we'll be back to back dynos so may never know

I’ve been enjoying the more torque and top end. Will be tracking it with the stacks sometime soon

No dyno yet, do want too and will install previous manifold and tune to get baselines. 22RPD has some posted.

I’ll keep it on but if I go for any long road trip I’ll probably swap the manifold due to highway fuel economy. Will get final production too.

People have different use cases of course. What they are willing to deal with.

While driving only 2 over ambient, sitting at a light yes it will increase. 22RPD has talked about heat shields for these for those maybe interested.

These runnings are shaped the way cause they did optimize for this use case. Imma have to say these probably make more but the more competition and development for the n52 power is what we are here to see.

Thanks for the reply. Have you seen the fuel economy worsen with the stacks? What sort of change are we talking?

I believe StageFP are working on a cam upgrade at the moment. It would be cool to see how the velocity stacks can be made to work with them once they are released. I think decision for me with be whether larger cams can be made to work with the velocity stacks. I imagine tuning for idle and low load could be tricky without a TB

Keep in mind I’m AWD as well. Average from 13L/100km to about 18-19L/100KM. City can be good but I do good amount of highway, not to bad for my use case rn.

Hell yea would be cool to see some cams on this platform. I still got MILVs to install which can give a good bump in power and torque too. I wanna see the limits of this engine NA and it still has room for more.

Hello there, fellow beta tester.

My car is experiencing a "soft limp" which is pulling timing so this may not accurately represent fuel economy on public release but I can get a steady 32mpg at 70 mph and 20mpg at 98 mph (tested during a 30 mile cruise).

Just like ChilledN52 I am also AWD

Yea I’m jealous of that fuel economy. I kinda also had a soft limp due to scoring of exhaust camshaft.

Where does the MAP sensor go? I couldn't get any vacuum to read porting into a runner, maybe if I would have used all six it would have been enough.

Map sensor had a port on cylinder 6 for two screws to hold it in.
