the press release states with July production, not that there will be an update for existing vehicles

The official press release from BMW Group unfortunately doesnt mention compact size models but hopefully carscoops article is right: The new BMW Operating System 8.5 will be gradually introduced in all midsize, executive and luxury model ranges1) from BMW. "

Y’all going to be touching the screen a lot more than you think. Especially thanks to the climate control.

I noted one display option that moves the info nearer to the center, but it still is that bizarre hockey stick. Hopefully there will be over-air updates or something...
The HUD is too convenient and clear to bother looking further down. When you approach redline the HUD has a focused multi stage shift light/tach. It’s pretty cool. You probably won’t care how cluttered the cluster is since you’ll be looking at the HUD when you need to know right now.

Not here. This car will go fair weather only. On my E90 335i, most of the Summers, my climate control is off and sunroof open.

You’ll touch it every single day (that you drive it).

ID9 is completely off the table.

8.5 is up in the air, literally.

I think I saw in their announcement that 9 will be coming first to the compact-class models like X1 , 2 Series, etc while 8.5 first to the mid-size, executive and luxury ones like BMW 7 Series; BMW iX, BMW i4, BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW XM, etc ?

For most of us, I think the issue is with how the display is not integrated within the dash. Functionality wise I am sure most of us will love it.

for the curved screen in my g42 I can say 90% of the time I forget how it is integrated because, obviously, most of the time you see the display from the front , not from its sides or the back.
But aside the integration, vs the idrive 7 hardware , its resolution and screen estate difference is so huge !

Agree - the video game speedo and tach are stupid; give me good ol' round gauges.

There's a funny dichotomy about gauge clusters. You want all the info, but then sometimes you don't. That's where configurable UX comes into play. Change will accommodate you good Sir.

According to C&D we’ll be getting an OTA update (though it leaves some iDrive8 vehicles off the list of that in fact have it):

“BMW is in the business of giving consumers what they want, which is why the iDrive 8.5 infotainment update the company is releasing this summer will be more smartphone-like than ever. For models that currently have iDrive 8, the revised infotainment software will be available via production or an over-the-air (OTA) update. The list of BMWs includes the 7-series, the electric i4 and iX, the mid-size SUVs (X5, X6, and X7), and also the plug-in-hybrid XM.”

So watching those videos, and they're specifically for an M car, with graphics that are M only. But is this actually the case, or do 'M lite' cars (M240i) get these displays too?

Time will tell, but I'd be concerned it's overly bright at night and glare city during the day. Even if all-screen is the future, it doesn't mean that having covers over the gauges wasn't a good idea. That 2nd video was reflections from beginning to end.

It's a powerful feature, hopefully isn't constantly annoying.

In 6 months of use I have never once thought it was overly bright or bothered by glare

No problem! I really have loved iD8. Though I was coming from a car with iD0 (2012 135i), so I was excited to get any kind of advanced tech in a car for once.

For the record I still hate the way it’s (not well) implemented, but as many have said, from the driver’s seat all you see is a really nice, crisp, hi-res screen. And the auto climate control works really, really well.
