May buy this 428i - Opinions appeciated

Hi all
Long time lurker first time poster

I have owned a couple of BMWs and had good experiences, I currently have 2007 e92 in Scotland which I unfortunately can not import to the states so I am shopping around here

I am looking at this car
https://www.earlstewarttoyota.com/in...rader_listings

I test drove it and it was seemingly well taken care of, tight with no noticeable whines or rattles.

I am aware of the timing chain issues that seemingly plagued these cars but this has a build date of 05/16 which i understand is after the updates of early 2015

I am not looking for a particular answer to anything more so some opinions.

I've had a hard time finding information about people having issues with the later n26s, I have not seen to many as they all seem to be earlier.

The carfax shows no service between 39k and 74k which is a little concerning but it is possible they went to an independent that did not record it.

The garage has ok'd me to take it to
https://motorhauspalmbeach.com

for an inspection which will run me $480+tax

My questions are
Would this garage be able to get in there enough on an inspection to get an impression of the health of the car?

Any thoughts at all on it, are they all going to explode eventually, would you buy it?

Thank you in advance

The car looks very good. I noticed the Michelin tires, to me that indicates the PO didn't mind spending a little more on this car.

Purchase depends on your wish list. This car doesn't have Navigation and Harmon Kardon sound. But it has comfort access which is really nice.

The inspection price seems to be on the high side. I believe here in Austin Texas they go for around $200. Florida may be more expensive but that's more than double the price.

I don't have any experience with the N26 engine, so no opinion here. GL with your decision.

This is a high mileage car. When it hits 100k a good amount of things need maintenance. It is not easy to sell so the dealer would very likely reduce the price. I would not buy it. Best of luck.

No nav can be pretty easily worked around if he's willing to retrofit apple carplay (somewhat expensive).

I do agree that Harmon Kardon was a dealbreaker when I was looking for my car... that seemed like a massive PITA to retrofit aftermarket, not to mention pretty damn expensive.

Another thing I hugely regret is not buying my f30 with the m sport package... if looks don't matter to you then go for it, but if it does, it's so much easier to get an M sport. Conversions are possible but $$$ and lots of research/planning.

Expect to have to replace many of the plastic internal parts that will inevitably fail with higher mileage. You should be good from any catastrophic failures though if it's past the 2015 timing chain refresh.

I would personally pass, but it's all up to what you want.

Thanks for the replies

They agreed $17k out the door and even though it was built May 2016 so should be good in regards to the timing chain, I decided to pass on it

Back in the market

This is $25k out the door which seems steep for the miles

I'd be hesitant to buy a used BMW from other than a BMW dealer or private sale. For instance, why was this car traded in to a Toyota dealer? One would think if the owner was really happy with it he'd have bought another Bimmer...unless he got a Supra.

I like the one in Auto Maxx. It has the B46 engine, I hear good things about it.

Glad you decided to keep looking. Don't want to be the negative guy, but SULEV costs more to maintain than non-SULEV. Based on what? The minor research I did on it when looking for my car. It costs more to have a car that produces a lot less emissions.

The SULEV warranty more than makes up for any increased maintenance costs.

Search 'BMW SULEV Warranty'. Covered items are warranted for 15 years/150k miles. You must live in a SULEV state.

Thank you
I have read through lots of threads and found the 2016 428i is mentioned on there. Some places say it's state specific, some say it's not. Some folk even talk about registering their car in another state to get warranty coverage

What a total head ache, it's a shame because the first car I seen looked very well cared for. Clean in side and out with no knocks or rattles and the dealer was to me taking it away to have it inspected, if I didn't find all the issues online I would have come home with it

For that price, you might as well get an older used 440i. The B58 will last you as long as you want it to.

B46 is still a great option if you don't want/need the extra power. There are some notable issues like the oil filter housing or the coolant line, but apart from those it's bulletproof.

My parents bought their 430i convertible from a Toyota dealer. Zero problems, Zero issues.

the B58 suffers the same issues as the B48, very similar engine with two cyls lopped off.

Don't suppose any one is local in Washington that knows anything about the dealership?

I think you're better off getting a 430i instead of a 428i but you should find one with M Sport. The Executive package is optional but gives you the icon adaptive head lights which look super aggressive.

Very nice. If you can swing a 440i budget wise you definitely should the B58 is wonderful.

Nicely loaded. Six documented oil changes. Recent water pump. I see a test drive in your near future.

Looks like an absolute steal. If I found something like that in Canada I would've bought it within 24 hours.
