I would start by cleaning it all up (you'll need to at some point anyway) then you can have a better chance of spotting where it's leaking from

Being an N43 318i owner myself I can't really see any normal road condition where 6k rpm in any gear is either acceptable or good driving?

The fact something went pop and leaked oil is down to self induced crap driving skills in my mind.

Just my 2p worth.

Sounds like you should trade it in for a Toyota hybrid because BMWs aren't for you.

Is it using the engine in a way that it was designed for (6000rpm is actually when it makes peak power) or the risk of breaking the sound barrier with 140hp that bothers you most?

I’ve been a BMW driver since 2006 of various types…. it doesn’t mean I have to drive like a twat.

Hopefully you’ll put yours into a ditch upside down whilst hitting the rev limiter in every gear, it will certainly be safer for the rest of the road users. If you want to drive a car to it’s limits take it on a track day and thrash it properly!

I bet you do still drive like a twat though! Probably just a slow annoying twat. One that stops, then indicates. Maybe one that parks in the middle of the road because they will only be two seconds. You`ll protest, but YOU do something that someone else will consider twatish!

The only true twats are those that wish harm on others....

As for your oil leak OP I hope you`ve identified the problem and hope you have years of trouble free driving after fixing it.

I actually own a 118d which is quite a bit faster than a 318i and yet I can perfectly hit the rev limiter without even breaking the speed limit. If you don't understand how this works you're the one who can't drive.

No one is talking about driving a car to its limits. But using a 140hp engine to its limits is certainly very possible to do legally on the road and without "driving like a twat", we're not talking about an M3 here. This engine is designed to rev to 6500 and like I said it doesn't even hit peak power until 6000rpm, it's designed to rev that high, the OP wasn't doing anything he shouldn't have done that would justify the engine failing. You seem to think he deserved his engine being damaged by using it as intended by the manufacturer and perfectly within the law, which makes it pretty clear who the twat is here.

Seems like you're one of those old farts who screams at people driving by because their exhaust is loud.

"You used your engine within it's safe operating limits, therefore you're a bad driver and the failure is deserved."

Really??

Keep your 2p to yourself next time.
