F1 2024: Canadian GP - Montreal (June 7)

Quote:
Montréal
When was the track built?
The man-made Notre Dame Island in the middle of the St Lawrence River was created for the 1967 Expo 67 World's Fair. Once the expo and the ensuing 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics had left town, some clever people decided to make a race track out of the island’s roads. And lo, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame, as it then was, came to be.

When was its first Grand Prix?
With the Canadian Grand Prix having been in search of a permanent home for a number of years in the 1960s and 1970s, the Circuit Ile Notre-Dame first hosted the race in 1978. Fittingly, Gilles Villeneuve claimed his maiden win, at the track that would end up bearing his name.

What’s the circuit like?
The fast, low-downforce circuit is one of the drivers’ favourites. The track is quite stop-start, with lots of heavy-braking chicanes and the famous hairpin to get the anchors working hard. Out of the corners, though, the track is quick and flowing, while the most iconic piece of the circuit comes right at the end of the lap: the Wall of Champions, so-called after excursions into it from Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher during the 1999 Canadian Grand Prix weekend.
Most epic race? Has to be this one surely:

it's a terrible post introductory GP post compared to the quality ones by other members but I thought I'd make a post about Ocon not getting a new contract with Alpine

The 2011 race. It was memorable...so many "twists" making the outcome impossible to foresee. The race included a torrential non-stop rainstorm causing a two hour red flag stoppage. One anecdote...We had a young Japanese couple sitting next to us...they had no rain gear...luckily, we had two extra ponchos that saved the day for them. While it took seemingly forever to complete, it truly was an epic GP.

The Monaco crash sure didn't help his cause. A pity. He's a good enough driver. I bet Ricciardo is eyeing a return to Renault. Sadly he won't beat Ocon either.

My predictions:

1. Max
2. Nor
3. Per
4. Sai
5. Lec
6. Rus
7. Pia
8. Alo
9. Gas
10. Hulk

I think RB will be back in form on a fast, low downforce track. I think Norris will be fast, but Piastri will still struggle with race pace. Ham will complain himself out of the top 10.

It was wet but definitely worth the 2 hours + rain delay.

back in the day when they can drive on full wets because they didn't rely on underfloor suction for downforce, or is it the 13 vs 18" wheels ...

Perez re-signs for RB for 2 years. OMG they could have switched to someone able to challenge Max but no, same old snooze fest to keep him.

What a waste of a good seat and a better / younger driver. As you were so exciting Red Bull......

Agreed but don't think it matters as others seem to have caught up and are challenging RB.

Snooze fest? Checo had the most overtakes on the grid last year and is second so far this year. So if you want an interesting race, Checo provides it. There's already a battle going on for #1, so who cares if the RB#2 driver isn't it.

When someone challenges, or even thinks they can challenge Max, it ruins them. Checo isn't that person. As much as he wants to win, he isn't there to challenge Max and he knows it.

A couple of poor showings when Max was also struggling, isn't telling that he's on the way down. IMO, this weekend should be a return to form for RB, but we'll see.

Also, it sounds like Checo's sponsors are basically paying Max's salary so there's that...
