Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power - Shadow Code 30FF
Hi Guys - This just happened the other day; had driven the car for an hour and half or so in 104 degree weather, traffic.. pretty bumper to bumper. Got off the freeway, got gas, got back on the freeway.. bam: Engine Malfunction. Reduced Power. No boost at all.
Take it to the dealer, closed, wait 10 minutes, restart car, no error messages. Check controls are OK. Car runs fine. I drive it about 140 miles [had plans], and when I get home check codes.. Exhaust flap ['golf t mod'], and 30FF Low Boost shadow codes. Dealer has it, they just called and said it's due to the exhaust flapper being disconnected. I informed them it's been disconnected for about a year and a half, and that the flapper is more for drone/sound purposes and wouldn't cause a 30FF low boost leak on the intake side, not to mention it wouldn't suddenly cause an engine malfunction. They are going to continue looking at it, but just curious if anyone else has any feedback.. Could this be the turbos, wastegates, etc? My only mod is the Golf T and BMS DCI. No tunes. Thanks (FWIW, I searched a bit and did see some people had some cracks etc in some of the piping)

Yea.
It could be a cracked charge pipe or just worn out vacuum lines. Leaking boost canisters. Leaking FMIC Connections. Visual inspection and or pressure testing the system is the only way to fix a 30FF. |

they should do a smoke test, but id goto another dealer if they think the golf tee mod threw the 30FF. either they are lazy and dont want to work on your car or incompetent. either way it doesnt look good.

Why would you go to the dealer anyway? Most dealer techs can't diagnose their way out of a wet paper bag, much less the world's least informative code, 30FF. It could be one or more of many different things, so no one here can diagnose this by the little info you have supplied. Sorry, that's the way it goes.

So just a quick update.. dealer performed two pressure tests and couldn't find or replicate the issue.
Been about two weeks, ~400 miles - on the way home, ~5K RPM shift from 4th to 5th, bam, reduced engine power. Drove it directly to the dealer with the light on and they pulled it into the back with the code active to check it. Will see what they say tomorrow.

They are good willing all of it - which I completely appreciate - But I have the BMW Gold warranty to 100k, so I fail to understand why they needed to get authorization for a good will.. they did the same with my sunroof, had to get good will to replace the sunroof cassette..

Update:
Picked up the car today after a [1] turbo replacement and new actuators. Drove it about 2 miles, stopped for 5 mins, restarted - long crank, started shaking to life, then reduced engine power. New codes: 3100 Unknown, 2A9A Camshaft inlet sensor Do you guys have any thoughts or ideas? Maybe the tech left something unplugged?

BMW of Ontario; my first visit there was terrible, but I had a talk with one of the higher ups and since it's been good, minus the check engine lights of course!
