Seat sensor malfunction
Hey fellow forumers..I am getting an error code that requires me to change the mat in the front passanger seat, it does not detect the person there, and thus does not activate the airbag. So, do any of you know the part number for this, and how to change it out? I did all the searching through the diy and other forums and have no come across this. I appreciate any help in advance.
Thanks! |

This is not something that many if any of us would have done ourselves. I assume the car is no longer under warranty correct? I had a problem with my sensor once but they fixed it under warranty so I cannot help.

Just took a look at getbmwparts.com Just search under your model year and put in sensor for the search. You will be able to find it. The one for my car is 65 bucks so I assume that is most likely what others will be.

The car is under extended warranty, but they still charge $140 each time just to look at it, and then its very conditional. Car still has only 49k miles though...
Anyways I did a quick search on getbmwparts.com and came up with this Electrical - Restraint systems - Supplemental restraint system - Front sensor however, there are two of them, and I dont know which one the one for the passanger seat is. |

Mallard, thank you for the part number, however is there any way you can send me a link to somewhere to order it online?
I can not find this part on getbmwparts.com, the search comes out empty. Also, do you guys have an exploded parts view for the front passanger seat? Thank you for your help, so far it has been outstanding! |

You will need to remove the seat from the car, remove the seat bottom, remove the leather from the cushion, replaced the mat, re-attach the leather to the cushion with "hog rings", re-install the seat bottom, re-install the seat, and then have the MRS module programmed by the dealer.
The mat needs to be enabled, on the E90 you need to encode the MRS module to do so. |

okay goff, do you know of a tutorial or a diy writeup of what you just mentioned. I can do everything but remove the leather from the cushion, so a writeup or anything similar to a step-by-step would be really helpful for me.
Thank you very much. |

This is a job for an independent shop or, worse case, the dealer. You need the BMW diag equipment to check and program it once it's replaced, and you also need to be careful doing the job or you can disable or trigger the airbags! We had to replace ours twice while we owned the E36 M3. One other time it was a mis-routed cable pulling on the connector to the sensor.
Not really a DIY job, sorry. |

Do any gurus out there know what weight on the seat is supposed to
a) deactivate the airbag and b) activate the airbag My E90's pretty inconsistent in deactivating the airbag when my tweener sits in the front seat. On my 09 Toyota is always deactivates the airbag for her. |

I need to take my car in for a similar problem. When someone sits in my passenger seat and gets out of the car, the sensor still thinks they are sitting in the seat and keeps reminding me to put on the passenger seatbelt.

This I believe is a recall item. Check out the NHTSA web site and search for:
NHTSA Action Number: EA08001. It should not cost you any money out of pocket. If you bought the car from an independent used car-dealer, it is highly likely that the recall was not done. |

I know its a recalled item, and I did buy my car from an independant dealer, however when I take it to the dealership, they refuse to fix the problem and deny that there is warranty, and they jkust tell me my car has electrical problems, which I do not believe. What I want to do is call bmw na, give my vin number and ask if my car was affected by the recall, and if it was, tell bmw na to call the dealer and let them know they have to do the recall work.
Now my only problem is, how do I get a hold of bmw na? What's their direct number? |

Here is the number for BMW NA 800-831-1117. Any BMW dealer will be able to give you this info for the recall if you provide the last 7 digits of your VIN.

I already told them that. The local dealership says that they know there is a recall, but my car has "electrical problems" which make the light go on, which is a load of garbage.
