Thanks, I am assuming many others run this same oil? Just a little nervous about running what's not specified on the manual even though it's likely fine.

Remember, what's recommended in your '22 manual is now expanded for '23. I believe it went from 0w20 to 0w30. Absolutely nothing wrong with tailoring your oil to your geographical conditions; it should actually be encouraged. The first number before the 'w' (winter) is simply the viscosity on cold start-up. Check my memory, but 0w should be -40F and 5w should be -22F. Why would you want to loose a little thicker lubrication on start-up in exchange for Arctic weather that you don't have in NJ summer's?

Agreed, I didn't realize there was a range in temps for the w recommendation but it completely makes sense. It would make me sleep better at night knowing others have ran this over time with no issues.

I know there's a lot of dispute over the 0w20 recommendation not being a true requirement, but at the same time, the engineers approved the recommendation.

Sure, the engineers approved it, but I'm betting if the engineers were left alone by the government we wouldn't see 0w20. That's a direct result of CAFE ratings (MPG efficiency). Look outside of the USA where CAFE isn't a thing and guess what, it's often a different recommendation.

I'd love to hear the reasoning on why 0w30 was listed for 2023 when it was only 0w20 in 2022. Could it be because the B58 performance and heat from the turbo was breaking down the 0w20 to unacceptable viscosities at 10,000+ mile intervals?

Copy, yeah in that case I am at a minimum sold on 0w30, just want to read up on the impact of using 5w in spring/summer. I don't know much about oil unfortunately.

The “w” literally means “winter”. Go with 0w if your mornings are -23F to -40F.

At the end of the day your car will be fine with either. Do you like your clothes generic or tailored? Either way you’re covered. 😉

My 23 only lists 0w20 which agrees with what I pull up with my VIN on myBMW. Could be other specs for different VINs maybe.

I’m with you on your recommendation. If I wanted to keep the car past warranty I’d run a w30 or w40. I’d even go so far as to dump the warranty stamp 0w20 LL 17FE and put in the heavier oil after each oil change under the service plan. Only those crazy people living in the likes of Alberta or Saskatchewan need 0w.

The Owner's Manual for my 23 says 0W-20 or 0W-30.
