idrive 7 vs idrive 8
after saw a new idrive 8 is coming on the 2 series, i think we need a poll to vote which one do you prefer on your car in future. my opinion i really don't like a idrive 8 and new gear shift.

iD8 looks half assed, it's a lazy design just for the sake of being different from the previous gen. No reason why they had to get rid of the climate and preset buttons.. this is a crappy trend that was started by Tesl-ugh
Btw this is coming from someone who always has the latest tech and gadgets. I'm in my 20s, not some old dude who hates tech lol (no offense to any old dudes who hate tech) |

Wonder if parts shortages motivated the early change over. A hexagonal screen for the dashboard vs some cookie cutter square screens. Looks like a chart plotter on a boat or the screens in my office that I run spreadsheets on.

I prefer idrive 7 but the only issue with it is in bright sunlight the screen is hard to see especially the tach position. I hear that the screen in idrive 8 is brighter so might mitigate that issue...
Oh and where's the gear stick gone?? lol |

I like having a dedicated cluster and a separate screen for the infotainment. Having some information in the cluster is nice (like song being played) but I also really enjoy a HUD. Also prefer having some standard buttons for HVAC.
There's just something about a huge rectangle that doesn't look so great in application, IMHO. I mean, MB's screen is ridiculous but they contoured it to the dash so I'm giving it kudos for that. The idrive 8 reminds me of the screen in the CLA 45... just a little less boy racer. https://m.futurecar.com/4348/Mercede...hboard-Display |

I don't mind ID8 in theory on the Electric new models they don't look to bad but in this 3 range they just look like an afterthought it really need the whole dash redesign to make it work

I don’t mind either. Honestly it looks clean. You can always use the intelligent assistant to control stuff. I also don’t care because I have the idrive 7 so no point in switching.

I did think the drivers display was really dark & drab on the ID7 but then I'm coming from a Mercedes lol , wasn't keen on the old drive selector as it looks a bit dated , the dealer tells me that the ID8 is a big leap in definition and brightness & is much shaper & faster, it's obviously bigger , its also more customisable , I have not seen it in the flesh but I think I will rather have ID8 when my car comes .

My opinion, design of screen idrive 8 at driver side looks much uglier than merc and idrive 7. One more, why did u trust at saler/dealer when they said that what they say just make them sell better. When i asked 10 dealers for my order, i told them "why car build take so long like that" and many dealers replay "because it build in German" what 2 series build in German |

Why isn't anyone mentioning the tech specs of both options?
Resolution, refresh rate, processor speed, etc. The looks are one thing, but the performance is what I'm keen to learn more about. It looks much more futuristic (and in line with Tesla-style offerings), but it looks a bit 'slapped on' (worse than the Benz options). |

I have an order on a 22 that looks like it will be a 23. Here is my 2 cents. At first I was pissed and didn’t like the iPads or the little thimble shifter. Now I am trying to be more positive and telling myself that the dash looks more modern with more functionality. And the shifter makes things more clean plus it is hardly used. I don’t know. That is the approach I am trying lol

Here is a video from Motormouth Canada where they talk about “the 5 worst trends in the auto industry”. The talk about the new shifters and the move to large screens, etc. When it comes to screens versus buttons, they mention BMW by name. I actually think they are right on all 5 counts. It’s worth a watch. Below is a link.
If it comes to this new BMW interior design or moving on, I hate to say this because the M240i is one fantastic machine but I will have to at least look at the competition. Bob |
