DIY: Cabin Air Filter stripped threads repair

My cabin air filter threads where stripped so I ordered some Brass Press-Fit Expansion Insert for Plastics from McMaster.

1- Drill the plastic thread with the adequate drill bit size (1/4") according to whichever insert you ordered.

2- Use some type of glue for plastic to make it stronger.

3- Push/hammer the insert inside the drilled hole.

4- Done.

Materials that I used:

- Brass Press-Fit Expansion Insert P/N: 94510A050

- M6x1 Screw P/N: 98093A436

- JB Plastic weld

Note: I would not recommend getting the same insert I used because I found out they are a little too big. It would have worked better with a smaller one.
A better one to use would be:

- Brass Press-Fit Expansion Insert P/N: 94510A045
http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=94510A045

- M5x0.8 screw P/N: 98093A312
http://www.mcmaster.com/nav/enter.asp?partnum=98093A312

Edit: Fixed screw part number mistake.

Awesome thanks for this. Mine got stripped when some hasty technician forced the wrong size bolts in there.

Just another person chiming in that this is an awesome idea, and thanks for posting this! I'm not sure why I never thought about doing this...but it's a great idea. Especially given how many times it seems like I end up taking that damn thing off... I'm missing a couple of bolts on it anyhow.

Now someone just needs to do a writeup on how to DIY fix the little sensor things that are near this ( on either side, I think they're rain sensors?). Mine no longer clip in . The dealer that I always took my car to sure did abuse the engine compartment...

I approve. I was going to do the exact same thing for the intercooler mounting holes.

You are welcome guys.

I don't know how they could engineer a steel screw to screw on a plastic thread

Most likely just the effects of mass production. Literally every penny saved is considered. Probably had the screw somewhere else in another assembly and was cheaper than bringing in another plastic variant.

Anyone want to order those from McMaster and split them up for whoever is interested? I don't need a pack of 25 inserts and 100 bolts.
