photos of the HPFP from BMW AG engine model...
I was at BMW Welt last week. I saw they have this cool display of their various production engines. The N55 model caught my eye. Here is a look at it. AND of our little Achilles Heel (N54 & N55), the HPFP up close and personal. I think this is interesting because many people don’t realize that the pump is driven off of the motor and not out back in the tank. I think this engine model is an N55, because I only see one turbo hanging off of it. Please correct me IF I am wrong.

first picture is the mini cooper S engine
Then there is a mix of N54 (without timing chain) and N55 note how the compressor wheel of the N55 is small! It will never bring the same boost as the 2 compressors of n54!!!!! nice pics |

Ours don't look terrible, but nothing to write home about...but check out the rods on the N14. Those things are BEEFY!!! Wonder if the crank end diameter is the same as our N54s...and how long the rods are...possible cheap built motor option???

I'm surprised they let you take pictures there. I would have thought they would stop you because you might use your "spy shots" to duplicate their technology and build your own BMW in your basement.
Great shots!

Looks like the N55, twin power turbo, as opposed to twin turbo.
They didnt have that display when I was there last year, pretty cool. They did have all the engines out on display, but not taken apart like that. Here is what I snapped off. Not trying to steal thread just showing what I saw. Where did they have this new display set up??? |

Their thoughts are probably that any organization that has the resources to actually manufacture a motor like this would have the funds to buy a BMW and take it apart

I think I got some of the pictures messed up. I think your right, there was a N54 and a N55 motor there. I just put messed the pics together. Maybe this is an excuse to go to the Welt and again and take more pics!! IF you want to see my original order pics you can see them here. http://s764.photobucket.com/albums/x...est%20%202010/ I also have my Octoberfest pics in that folder too. I fully agree with your assement of the N54! The is dead, long live the N54!!! |

I think they were there, bc I first saw this display at the IAA back in Sept 2009. They also had them on display at the Essen Motor Show this year. I think BMW must have a few "sets" of these "tubes". Btw... I don't mind your adding photos. Quite to the contray, I like it when others bring something to the table. Your photos enhance this thread. Great pics though, did you do the factory tour? I did, it was awesome. And our tour guide was Megan Fox's twin too so that didnt suck either, with her glasses and little blue uniform and car talk |

BMW AG Engine display N54 & N55
I ended up going back to BMW’s Welt today. I took some more pictures of their cool motor display. Something about these exploded engine display that I find really cool. You can see the HPFP and the casting on the crankshaft among other things. Sorry for my first posting mixup. I did a better job on these photos with the two different motors. Dackel. I have a Question for you guys.
1). Why does the tube on the right featuring the N55 motor say 306 to 326 PS (DIN.) ? In which BMW car/model does the N55 make 326 PS? 2). What is that lower pump for/do on the N55 motor? It's bellow the HPFP. The N54 motor (model) does not have this pump. ??? |
