Question: 335i e92 my08 vs 330d e90 my10
Hi Boys,
Just on your thoughts on the title? Just a small picture. Is the 330d e90 my10 with 45k 1 year newer worth about 5k more than the 08 my08 335i e92 with 90k on the clock. Both have premium selection. The 330d is basic model with 18 inch wheels and everything is standard. Whereas the 335i is almost full options with 19", sunroof, m package but it has 90k's on the clock. I'm coming from a 120d, So will the 335i fuel consumption put me off in the real world? What is the down and up. In terms of performance I'm sure the 335i is much better but stock vs stock not much difference in power but difference in ride quality? I'll be keeping the car for about 2-4 years, So is it better for me to spend the 5k more to get a newer car with less performance and also less options compared to the 335i which is pretty much full options but with 92k's on the clock will be an eye sore for some people. Thanks |

firstly the D is a good engine, but nothing compared to the N54.
you have very very different models there sedan/coupe for a start. I'd suggest you ask yourself 1. e90/e92 which do you want 2. auto/manual (wouldn't buy a manual D, but in auto they are similar stock for stock) 3. are you planning to mod? They are all important Q's but the last one may swing it, for 5K in mods on an N54, changes the car from comfy car with a bit of stick, to M3 eater |

Thanks pavo. 1) Either is fine leaning towards coup but love the sedan too 2) Both auto 3) I'm gonna have 3 year premium selection on either car so mod will not be a big thing for me maybe just a tune thats it. The objective is to have something that I can keep for 2-4 year atleast. The biggets dilemma for me is the $5k extra will i see it back from the fuel savings from the D oppose to the 13-15ltr/100km 335i |

Troy they're very different cars, if you wanted the diesel you'd buy that one wouldn't you?
Cost shouldn't matter that much, sure you could rationalise it by saying you'll save on fuel costs... think to yourself, if someone offered you these two cars for free - which would you take? If you tune the 335i, it'll affect your warranty (if it's found). |

Only thing is the KMs... but the N54 has proven to be pretty reliable so far bar a few common issues which aren't expensive fixes. |

I will say test drive it and see how things goes
but e92 with full option seems to be attractive!

Just be aware that the more power you have, the more you will be inclined to use it (or abuse it). Ask yourself, "do I need it or do I just want it”?
99% of people won’t even know the difference between the 30d and 35i, nor will they care. Most drivers will still think you're a 'bmw douschebag' if you're in anything but an m3, so the cachet of the 335i is only of interest to a small amount of people like us (though that is growing). Personally, the 330d is more than enough in stock form as a daily driver. Unless you want to go to WSID or track days etc, the difference between the 330d and 335i would hardly manifest in a noticeable way. As you already have a diesel, you will be used to the tractor sound anyway. A stock 335i will be as rubbish as a 330d on a racetrack anyway, you will need to spend up big to make it enjoyable to track a 335i; think new wheels, new tyres, exhaust, intake, suspension, brake pads, rotors, plugs, coils (at 90k, new injectors too), LSD and sustainability mods like new oil cooler and radiator. Trust me, you will also just get used to the power of the stock 335i and to up it by 40-60rwkw is too cheap and easy. From there, you can easily give it a quick squirt and before you know it, you will be 2x the speed limit and in danger of losing your license. Alternatively, you could just get the 330d, debadge it and get advan to mod it to the 335i exhaust as per that thread a few months ago. Best of both worlds I say. Just giving you some perspective. If you do go the n54 route, welcome to the club. |

I will not want to track the car. Too much money to maintain it. I guess can I ask guys with N54 reagrdless e8x or e9x, What are you getting in the real world for consumption. I know you buy this cars not for the fuel economy of it but coming for a diesel it's tough... :P All I need is : real figures with what car u r driving and style of driving ie city, highway? |

My economy is high 12s. Tuned and mainly city driving but I do my best to drive economically. Worst I've seen is high 13s with city driving. You work close to home anyway so I can't imagine you'd be doing that much driving... therefore if doing a lower amount of KMs each year it'd take even longer for the diesel to recoup it's cost. |

No comment re economy.
Normally I would say jump on the N54, but I think you may be just as well suited to a 330d. I know if I had a 330d to start with then it is unlikely I would have changed cars. There is ample power and heaps of torque which make it a good daily all rounder. Also an N54 will become expensive as you simply want to get a 'little' more power from it. Sure.. it starts with tune, but then why not just spend a bit more on DPs. And after DPs a little more money for meth and you're making 300rwkw.. |

I know you want a 335i, it's been itching I m sure lol. Just get it I think! There is no such thing as second best
Besides, you don't drive much, and even then, you can find a reason to smile all the way to the fuel station. It's a bad financial decision, but an awesome emotional decision. When r u getting it? Let's go cruising together. |
