Ha, thanks man, very tempting. I am actually shopping for a new vehicle right now, unfortunately it's for my better half.
I thought I had her convinced on an X5/X3 but we're headed to the Mercedes dealership today to look at the GLE/GLB. The GV80/GV70 are in the running as well.

I keep asking myself if I would pull the trigger on Thundernight Metallic over something like BSM. Have to see it in person and definitely need to wait till M2 comes out, which should be insane.

Porsche or Mercedes is the answer.

It's too extreme! It's too bland!

Porsches are absurdly expensive compared to M2 but certainly a car I want.

Mercedes lol. Not a driver's car.

It's honestly a confusing car with the strange angles ect.
BMW, as all car manufacturers, are slowly transitioning to EVs. This transition requires a rethink of the design language to one that is more compatible with the needs of an EV (more slab sided front bumpers / aero considerations etc...). They're thinking of the future, as they should be.

The G42 looks a lot like a car with lots of features and design elements taken from present and future EVs on the market. By incorporating certain characteristics now, the gradual transition to a more EV-looking vehicle is not as polarising to their loyal customer/fanbase as it would be if they just introduced a wholly unconventional design.

A bad example: imagine that the i3 never existed and was just released in 2021 as the successor to the 1 series.

That being said though I do find the exterior of the 1 series, 2 series GC, 4 series, iX, Z4 and even the new "ivision" repulsive. But IMO the G42 is OK - It can do with some adjustments which will likely come in the LCI.

Does not matter though. I want my premium German cars with their German price tag to be born in Germany. The BMW X being made in the USA is already pushing it for me, but I also can't be mad that they are creating jobs in my country. However, made in Mexico does nothing for me and only contributes a feeling of lost heritage and reduced brand mystique, both of which have been factors in my decision to pay double what I would otherwise need to for a set of wheels. Now, they still want me to pay double, but the product doesn't feel as special as it once did. Why would I consciously support this and spend my money on it? I just can't.
So let's say the G87 M2 is released and is a phenomenal looking car with mind blowing performance for 65k. You're passing on it because the still German car (with parts from all over the world) is being assembled in Mexico?
Yes. Hard pass. It would be that much more ridiculous to have a M car that isn't from the Motherland. Again, just my opinion.

I suppose I have other hobbies and interests, which allow me to see the opportunity costs involved in buying a car. If I'm going to spend $70k on a new G87, I want zero regrets and would be buying to own it for a very long time. If there's even one thing that will spoil the ownership experience, I'd rather just pass and put the money into other things I like.

Still going to be great cars, and I can't wait to see what the new M2 brings. I already know the new 2er is going to be a home run for BMW in terms of performance. Looks good too IMO.

Man, I know. I wanted this to be my next car.
So sad what BMW has done with the G42.

Panda Express might have had their cooking manuals written/translated by home grown cooks; However, I'll pass on authentic Chinese food from PE.

I hear you, 3 BMWs I have owned were all built in Germany, 2 of them I ordered. But the world we live in now is a Global economy.

X-3s have been built in S. Carolina for long time & most 3 Series are also built in same Mexico Plant. Don't think there have been any reported quality problems in those 2 plants?? Things change and we roll with it. But that said, be nice to see a few 3 series in person that have been built in Mexico plant to confirm quality and tight body gaps inside & outside. With prior 2 series generation I rarely saw any in stock on dealer lots, its a low volume seller for BMW

Proof w/owners, I checked BMW G20 forums on build quality from Mexico of their cars. Not one person stated they can see or hear any difference while driving incl. creaks & rattles. All stated they are satisfied vs their prior German built 3 Series and don't see a difference

My G20 was built in Mexico and I can absolutely assure you that the build quality is better than my E90 that was built in Munich. Sure pickin up from the Welt was an amazing experience but that's no longer available. As such I couldn't possibly care less where it's assembled from a quality stand point.
Don't understand those that fetishize these cars being built in Germany.

Thx for your comment on your 3 series built in Mexico. Some folks have issue adapting to ever changing Global economy. Many excellent vehicles are built in different factories these days; Robots do most of the heavy work anyway

I put in order & signed the contract today for new 230i, but probably be a few months until I see it

thanks DSTR, good luck if you move forward. Perhaps I'm taking a leap in faith not seeing or test driving the car first. But I had 2018 so know what to expect w/numerous improvements in the G42. I couldn't swing a M240 due to budget

The agent/dealer is preparing the offer/order before we are final. I will certainly pass more information.

I agree no test is needed. We know the engineering and systems now that are included. I have no doubts about the ride and performance. Just take my money lol

The RWD model is not produced but I like this new coupe. So difficult to find such a coupe with this power etc. My woman loves the new color of purple(Thundernight) so we will go forward.

Possibly we can move to the RWD once it is fully established etc. We can assess what changes and offers in terms of equipment are available. Time for the coupe again and move beyond the 440i Xdrive we have. We love coupe'!

good luck DSTR, I was glad the 230i was available in RWD but nothing wrong with AWD. It's Rear drive biased anyway in most situations

When will we see driving reviews, I don't understand launching a car without driving reviews.
It is like opening a restaurant but only to look at the food not taste it.
