Rebuilding an M57

I've tracked down a good short block to replace the M57 in my 2011 335d that spun a bearing last year, and plan to refresh it as I put it back together. What are our options as far rings, bearings, and gaskets? I see the genuine BMW stuff, but there's a few aftermarket options as well.

I seen the M57 in King Racing's catalog, but haven't found a lot of info on anyone actually running their bearings. Looked like Mahle and BMW were the only ring suppliers, and I only saw them per piston, not a full set. On gaskets, I didn't see anyone selling a kit per-say, looks like you have to order everything separately.

Any chance someone has a list of all the required gaskets for assembling an engine? What's the normal wear items people replace when doing an overhaul besides the obvious stuff? Timing chains I'd assume, maybe water pump and thermostat, possibly the oil pump? I didn't see anything definitive on if the con rods or main bolts could be reused, but I figured I'd replace with studs while I'm in there anyhow.

Any particular vendor that would be recommended for all this stuff? I'd prefer being able to get everything (or as much as possible) from one source.

There are a few aftermarket ROD bearing options.....but when i did mine the main bearings aftermarket options weren't right ( oiler holes were WAY off ) so i had to get BMW main bearings. rod bolts are TTY so its recommended to replace them. Lots of places sell the gaskets....FCP...tunemyeuro....but currently you'll find it difficult to source head stud kits.

If I understood what I read in another thread correctly, the oversized aftermarket main bearings have the incorrect oil hole location, but the std size ones do not.

That might have been your thread I read that in, the poster had to buy the upper shells individually from BMW. I did message idparts about this, they said you can drill the holes in the correct place, although I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be doing that...

Yes that was prob me.....i tried to drill them....made a small jig to hold them in place....but wasn't comfortable with the edge it created...so i just ordered them from BMW.....WAY more expensive. PM me and ill give you my number.....been through a few rebuilds and ill help answer any questions you got.

Stupid question but cant you just replace the rod bearings from the bottom of the engine by removing the oil pan?

Of course you can....but hes talking about doing mains and lots of other stuff.

I just picked up a set of head studs from Matt Whitbread. They are 230,000 psi tensile strength and of good quality like ARP. Will be doing springs and studs in the Spring.
