Potential M2 purchase

New to the M2 forums and wanted to reach out. So I have been on the fence for a while on whether to replace my 2022 Z4 with a new Z4 with a manual. As much as i love the convertible I really love the look of the M2 and the newer display for the dash. If they added the newer curved display to the Z4 it would be no hesitation. But i am not sure i want to upgrade 3 years newer to have the exact same interior. Just looking for thoughts and opinions from those on here that have the M2 and especially anyone that came from a Z4 to an M2. I would wait for a 2025 for the hope of some new colors that are rumored to be coming a few of the new colors are amazing. Also hoping for some other interior color choices as well. Thanks for any input.

Drive both cars back to back once you get the chance. They're very different. The Z4 is less performance oriented, even in the M40i package. However, the open skies, slightly lower center of gravity, and exhaust make it a lot of fun to drive on back roads, even packaged as an automatic. It'll be an amazing car once you can option it with a manual transmission and M Performance LSD.

I've spent money to replace a car I owned with an updated version.. and regretted not making a more stark change.

IMHO at $70k+ for the Handschalter package it would be a pass from me as a first or second car... if you're debating it as a third car, what the hell, why not- resale will probably be better

Wish the made a Z4M with a hard top and a manual. The M2 is the next best thing with the original "M formula". Smallest NEW full M you can get your hands on with a manual.

I can find an M2 a few hours away to test drive a 2024 but don’t think any dealer will have a manual Z4 on their lot anytime soon if ever available to test drive. And that’s another thing that has me stuck is the Z4 manual is supposed to feel better than any current M car. Thanks for the info everyone has posted so far i will be test driving one this weekend to see how the shifter and steering fell in the M2.

Hello fellow Vermonter!

I have not driven a Z4 so I can't give you much advice on that, but the B58 is fantastic and I would have loved to experience it paired with a 6MT.

That said I would love to see more G87s driving around the state!

If you really love the (Z4) convertible is a hardtop coupe 4-seater really for you? Yeah, you can get one with the sunroof but that won't be the same thing.

I owned a Boxster for 16 years. During that time I also owned several 2-door 4-seater coupes, a 2006 GTO, 2008 Cayman S, 2003 996 Turbo. The GTO, Cayman S and Turbo were all good cars but they were not a like for like replacement for the Boxster even though they had sunroofs.

You might consider hanging on to the Z4 -- it is a 2022 so not that old and I assume in excellent condition -- and if you think you could love the M2 for what it is -- and it is not a Z4 -- then get an M2.

Have to mention I rather liked the fact my Boxster, Cayman S and Turbo (more so the Boxster and Turbo as they were from 2002/2003) had very similar interiors, dash layout, controls.

What I found I didn't like so much was when in Dec. 2017 I switched to a 2018 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack and a 2018 MINI JCW. Both good cars but the differences in the interior was not to my liking. The Scat Pack had a touch screen LCD while the JCW had an iDrive like interface. This I preferred greatly over the touch screen.

I went from an auto 2021 G29 Z4 M40i to a manual G87 M2 last year. Loved the Z4 (it replaced a manual ND Miata I had for years) but missed rowing my own gears. Still, the B58 in the Z4 made me fall in love with BMW engines so the M2 ticked all my boxes, minus the open roof.

I drove the Z4 800 miles to trade it in and pick up the M2 then turned around and put 800 miles on the M2 back. No regrets. The M2 is a lovely machine and pulls like whoa. It is a weapon.

At some point I may pick up a used manual G29 Z4 in a few years but I’m still quite happy with the switch.

I feel like the S58 might suit a manual more than the B58, in terms of engine performance and RPM, how the S58 rewards revving it out vs the more torquey behavior of the B58. That might factor in to your decision as well

Well i did have the B58 manual before the Z4 a 440 xdrive 6mt but they offered almost what i paid to trade during the ridiculous period of high car prices.

So this Z4 is the first convertible i have ever had and i do love it but having only had it about 3 years. I think i might be ok without one again.

Thank you all for the input it gives me a few things to think about when i test drive an M2 this weekend. One concern i have is exhaust doesn’t sound as good in videos as the z4 does in person. Something i can listen to this weekend on the test drive. I know video doesn’t do it justice. Will keep you all posted after my test drive.

Well, if you think you won't miss the Z4/convertible the M2's a nice alternative.

Fellow Z4 M40i driver, also absolutely love the M2 despite not having driven one lol.

Will second the point brought up earlier, if you enjoy open air driving, going to a fixed roof car will be a downer on nice days. I went from a targa C6 Corvette to a C6 Z06, the extra power was great in short spurts on public roads but I terribly missed the open air more, for a fun car I realized it was an important factor.

But if your going to replace the Z4, the M2 is a great upgrade with extra versatility…..being in Vermont you have great roads to make use of the manual.
Plus you can drive the M2 a few years until a Z4 manual comes available second hand if you desire to get back into one again later.

Plus a simple mid upgrade changes it completely if that's a major hang up for the op.

as a random thought, i doubt the Z4 HS will get M drive pro with the 10 stage traction control. its a great system and helps build confidence in the car by slowly ratcheting it down as you get more comfortable with the dynamics and power. probably my favorite part of the whole package so far.

Yeah after a lot of thinking over the last few weeks i am leaning more towards a 2025 M2 once the new colors are officially announced i will likely place an order. I did test drive an M4 manual so i could at least feel the power difference. And since they both weigh similar it shouldn’t be much different. I got to see the San Remo green on a 440 and i was not a fan at all. Thundernight while nice in the sun also looks too dark and gloomy on a cloudy day. That limits my color choice on a new Z4 to portimao blue. Which is nice but not the wow color i’m really after. Here’s to hoping voodoo blue or one of the bright green or aqua colors i saw in the leaked info happen.
