Clear Coat Recommendation
I removed a spoiler on my OEM sparking graphite metallic. It needed to be repainted all along the top of the trunk. I have some aerosol paint, sprayed 3 coats, and then the clear just completed destroyed everything. It looks more like a matte grey now.
I know they put additives in these clear coats, so I just need to find one that works with this paint. In typical BMW fashion, I imagine there's a particular brand that works better than the standard store bought ones? I used Dupli-Color's clear coat and it's absolute garbage. Any help would be appreciated. |

Did you use 2K clear? Clear-coat application is sensitive to humidity when applying. You will have to sand off the damaged / bad clear coat before putting on a new clear coat.

You can get away with spray canning something like a lip spoiler but it would be very difficult to get a good finish on an entire trunk that way. Humidity is definitely a key factor, but also SGM is a hard color to match and would generally need to be blended so I'd love for you to prove me wrong, but I think you'll need to have this professionally done.

I'd definitely recommend just taking it somewhere to have it painted professionally unless you have access to a good spray gun. I paid under $300 to have a bumper painted - I'd hope that the trunk lid would be closer to $200. |

I didn't use 2k clear, Auto Zone just had the one Dupli-Color clear coat, so I went with that. It even sprayed in small globs instead of a proper spray, so I think it's just a trash product.
I live in a high humidity place, so that could definitely make it more difficult. I might have tk get it professionally done, but Im thinking it could definitely look loads better than it does with a good clear coat. Would 1200-1500 grit sandpaper be good to remove the clear ? Here's what it looks like now. The clear essentially flashed any life the paint had. Almost like if the color developed a bad drug habit it would look like this. |

It's hard to say what grit to start with. I generally start with 2000 and frequently check the progress. Use lots of water and a little dish washing detergent help with lubricity. I recently had to do a large part of my CF roof because some birds on a high light pole left some presents in the hot Texas sun. What you start with will depend on how thick the "new" clear coat is. Go slowly (BTW, I am not a professional paint and body person, just a DIYer)

This is legit, but still only as good as the person applying it. I'd be hesitant to do body panels myself, small parts off of the car... sure

There are several YouTube videos on how to properly apply the 2K clear coat. Have a look Type in "2K clear coat".
