I seem to be getting a metallic tinkling noise on cold starts from the left pipe on my e89 35i. It goes away completely when the car is warmed up. I don't think it's a leak because the sound disappears also when any sort of throttle is applied when parked. Anything to be concerned about?
NB: this isnt coming from the engine, only the left exhaust once the flap opens in the right side exhaust pipe. Last edited by Alext; 01-16-2011 at 07:18 AM.. |

You need a new driver side muffler. Its the flap inside the muffler causing the rattle. They are known to fail and rattle, its very very common.

Muffler area? It is most likely coming from the turbo - downpipe connection; thats where wastegate rattle occurs. Maybe you have an exhaust leak?

I'm getting rattling in my 335 from the driver's side muffler when it's slightly warmed up at idle. I have the golf tee mod done, but that shouldn't cause a rattle. Was there before I did the golf tee mod. Is it worth taking to the dealer? Off course I can take the golf tee mod out beforehand.

Well thanks for the input but I doubt its the wastegate rattle. Car is brand new 2011 model with <1000 miles for starters and its more like a ticking than a rattle. I will have a check for leaks, but seems strange it dissapears with any minor throttle.

Ok i put the car on ramps and checked underneath. I found the cause. It is the actual sheet metal of the muffler belly that is resonating at a specific frequency (RPM) at idle. I discovered it ONLY happens when the air con is on. It lessens as the muffler material warms up hence why after a drive it totally disappears.
When I place my hands on the underside of the muffler and apply pressure it absorbs the resonance and the noise ceases. There is nothing I can really do about and it isnt any cause for concern in any case. I can see though that the stock system does appear to have some restrictive bends along its length. |

I have it as well but it goes away after the car revs down after being started. I have the golf tee mod as well, but I highly doubt that is the cause. And like Alext said it's a ticking not a rattle. It's been there since I bought the car and I've reported it to the dealership everytime I bring it in for service and each dealership (I have used two different dealerships for service) say that it is normal.
