To all who have had turbos/WG/actuators replaced...
Was there any out of pocket cost that you had to pay upon dropping it off or picking it up?

I had mine done 2 months ago. Didn't pay a dime. They had it for 2 weeks, so I had a loaner car for that long as well...Didn't even pay for that! Oh they replaced both turbos as well.

Zero because I am under full warranty. You shouldn't have to pay if you are still under 82k miles. My rattle wasn't a failure of the wastegates though, it was a failure of the wastegate actuator. Not sure if there is a loophole there. If the actuator is the cause of your rattle and isn't covered, the job usually takes a few days and I have heard it costs around 5k.

That's exactly why I am going in! Thank you for all of the replies! And not even a diagnostics fee?

Yep, no code when I got it done. It took two visits to get it authorized though, I had to have a tech come out and listen because the service advisor wasn't very accommodating.
However, I threw a limp mode after the repair... they didn't hook up the vacuum tubes properly after they re-installed the turbos |

I picked up mine 2 days ago, both turbos replaced. $0
No code, but I have a good relationship with my service advisor. He did mention later on that they were looking to get a code, maybe it was an excuse because it was taking long. Almost 3 weeks, and they provided a rental. It included oil change and coolant flush.

My SA told me they had to have a BMW engineer or something do a remote diagnostics I think before it got approval from corporate. They also performed a "drill bit test" on the waste gates.

That's the easiest one to reproduce. Just lose the chargepipe clamp and go WOT until check engine comes up.

special extended warranty only covers WG and turbo.
I have the service bulletin on the problem - it has a very specific protocol to the rattle. If you are not throwing codes then they replace the actuator rods (not covered under special extended warranty). This is what I had done and it fixed the problem for now. Luckily I had an extended warranty that covered it so no out of pocket costs. If the actuator rod fix does not correct the rattle then they will do the WGs or the turbos. Not very clear on what decides whether the turbos get replaced or the WGs. |

I've been dreading bringing it in for this...but it has to be done. I brought it in to them once for the rattle two years ago, and they "didn't hear anything". Can't wait to fight with them over this .
Anyone have any advice? |

Go in and tell ur SA about the rattle. Be able to produce the rattle (rev to 3500 and let off...they should rattle). If the SA plays dumb then say you know about the service bulletin for the WG rattle.

I think I paid like $11.50 for a gas surcharge in the loaner 328 they gave me... Considering I had the car for a week, put 350+ miles on it, and returned it out of gas on a flatbed because I was trying to return it on fumes I think I got a good deal.

I got 1 new turbo, the other turbo/wastegate was in spec and I had them install the upgraded waste gate actuator on that one, I paid a few hundred for it all. No codes, they did threaten with repairs in the thousands if they disassembled everything and determined it was all in spec after submitting measurements or whatever they send off to corporate.

I have CPO and ended up paying a $50 deductible because they replaced other items as well as the turbos. NO CODE required, just need to take your car in and complain about the rattle and also include the fact you're going through a Qt of oil every 1200 to 1500 miles helps. Before they could actually test the WG, they got approval to adjust them. Then on the second day they got approval to replace them. I'm enjoying my car now that it doesn't rattle.
ATTN: For everyone with PROcede Flash... When you get your car back, it will throw Low Boost Codes if you try to run it hard. You must re-install your PROcede. Also, DO NOT LEAVE ANY SIGN OF MODIFICATION. Most dealers will dig through your car looking for signs of modification and will deny the claim. I had the first dealership deny me because I had the USB cable going through the firewall still. I also left the ground strap for my meth pump. They even flagged my Alpina flash on the transmission as being a non-standard software. So do yourself a favor, don't give them anything to bitch about. After fixing all the issue over the weekend I took it to another dealer and had no issues. |
