a/c compressor pulley

Hello guys

Is it possible to change the ac compressor pulley without having to change the whole compressor because mine is broken ?
If possible a part number is needed

And can i put a smaller belt without fitting it to the compressor pulley as an alternaive at this time ?

By the way i found some chinese pulley on the market but i am not planning to change it every week

i have fitted now a smaller belt "6Kp 1660" that I did not attach it to the ac compressor pulley until i get it fixed
P.S I did not find any part number today for the pulley i searched the BMW ETK

It is most likely the AC clutch is broken due to the AC compressor seizing. The AC clutch/Pulley is not a separable replaceable item. Yuo need to get a new AC compressor.

If I bypass the compressor n put the smaller belt in for now. The only problem I will face is no ac rite? Does anyone have a diagram on how to put in the smaller belt?

I hate to tell you this, but BMW doesn't make a non-airconditioned version of the N52 for the 325i in the USA. You will not be able to get a "shorter" belt because it doesn't exist. And if for some unknown reason BMW does make a non-airconditioned N52 for other (outside the USA) markets and a belt does actully exist (which is doubtful), you'll not be able to buy it anyway because BMW stopped selling European-market parts in the USA several years ago. You need to get the AC system repaired.

my ac compressor pulley messed up and managed to bypass it with a smaller belt got it at autozone, bel brand is duralast 431k6 and works perfectly fine.

A/C BELT not covered under BMW Extended Warranty Gold Package. Anyone been told this by dealer?

The belt is $41 on-line at get BMW parts.com and takes about 10 minutes to install.

i want to bypass the ac compresor to. what type of belt can i use? there was one post here with a model but dont know if thats legit. btw its a 320i. thanks

Thanks for the idea.. I am currently doing this. Works fine, just seriously sucks to drive with no AC. Currently searching for a cheaper AC compressor suggestions are appreciated.

Since BMW never sold an E9X without A/C, you will never find an official belt that is the correct length to bypass the A/C pulley.

But there is nothing magic about BMW belts. Go to any autopart store and buy a shorter belt. As long as the width and number of grooves matches, then you will be fine.

I've done this on other cars.

Things to ensure:
1) That the belt is not too loose. If it is, it could fly off at high RPM and do some real damage.
2) There is no official belt routing diagram, so make sure the pulleys are still rotating the correct direction.
3) Make sure the belt won't "move" and make contact with anything in the engine bay when the engine REVS.
4) If you're not comfortable doing this, then don't. Get the A/C fixed.

So the pulley isn't changeable and a smaller belt isn't a right answer at least.
The only left solution is changing the whole compressor costs more than 1000$ i believe
Here is the problem, if i have it changed how could i be sure that the same problem wont get back to new compressor after working awhile?!!

My AC compressor seized at 82,500 miles way back in June 2009. Being that not many Indies had seen the E90 back then and were unfamiliar with it, I took my car to a BMW dealer and had them replace the compressor and drier. That was 206,000 miles ago. I didn't DIY it because I was not certain I could get the system completely vacuumed out and recharged without damaging the new compressor, so I left it for the pros who have the experience and equipment to make the repair. Anyway, my point is the AC compressor is not a high fail-rate component on these cars, so I'd not worry about the replacement dying on you soon after the repair.

hi to all,
sorry to digging and raising this old issue but I believe its better this way since yous have a sequel of similar issues.
my 320i is a 06-2007 (N46B20) model which I own from 2010. from years now i can hear a mechanical noise when car is idle or rolling especially with 2nd gear till 2.000rpm max.
noise is coming only when a/c compressor is NOT operating. so, when i have a/c on the noise stops.
at a BMW specialist I borough a shorter belt and isolated the a/c compressor and the noise disappeared immediately. So I am quite sure that the problem is coming from there. The issue is that when they tried to replace my a/c clutch they said that they saw the compressor in a mess and I should install another used one instead of mine.
I said no way since the noise disappears when a/c in on and also when it works it performs very very well.
I decided to have a go at a A/C specialist and when they saw it they said that our BMWs’ Calsonic Casei compressors they never had issues with their clutches and always the compressors go bad. But mine they said that is clearly performing great and I should leave it as it is till I have issues (forgot to mention that I already have done service to climate system a year ago and I used ti have that noise back then too).
So, I am concluding that it must be the bearing of the a/c clutch that does that noise. And when A/C is on probably the noise is changed due to forces on it and I am not able to hear it.
What I will do is buy a shorter belt (thanks a lot the friend here that claims that the 6pk 1660 will do the work, since the standard one is the 6pk 1870) and then I will remove the a/c clutch and will go to a bearing specialist shop (i.e. skf etc) and buy I brand new one for it.

I am waiting for your thoughts and help! If one knows what bearing I should buy for this then PleasE advise me!

I just read your problem with the ac probably the noise is coming from the clutch probably when compressor turn he will make rotational force and the noise disappear, for the bearing it can cause a clutch to wear and to brake the pulley however bearing will make like whining noise when the ac runs, for the bearing the dimensions are on the side of the bearing, so you will have to remove it first then buy a new one like from skf; you can take the old one with you to skf and they give the same if you have trouble finding the dimensions, however if the pulley brake the belt might destroy the fan on his way out and the alternator will stop, then you will be able to run on battery power to ignite sparks and wlectronicd until the battery drains, if that happens try not to use much power from it to reach the closest place
Note that there isnno clutch kit from bmw neither a part number for it or the bearing, you can buy a new compressor from Denso which i think it is an oem manufacturer like valeo or find one from a scrapyard or swith the clutch with a used compressor so you don't loose the refrigerant gas

many thanks for your answer and for all the info you have shared with us in this thread. I just ordered a shorter 6pk 1660 belt as you did in the past. I will have it tomorrow and will swap it on wednesday probably since it is raining heavily and will continue tomorrow too.
I do have a mechanical whining noise which comes and goes in a certain and stable repetition rate (1 sec it does the noise, 2 secs no noise, then again 1 sec noise and 2 no noise etc). so when idle and when car is rolling below 2000rpm you can hear whin-pause-pause-whin-pause-pause-whin-pause etc.
This is a noise that i have it for 2 years now and everyone had advised me that i shouldn't worry or search it till my compressor doesn't operate properly (which now does operate 100% perfectly).
now, beacuse I do not want to have any issues in the future with any pump operating from the belt, I decided to search a little more and I will replace the bearing for start and see how it goes.
just for the history, small engines like mine have a Calsonic Casei compressor and not a Denso.

update
the shorter belt 6PK 1660 installed few days ago and everything went well till now after 300miles. noise stopped immediately so now i am 100% sure that it was coming from the a/c compressor (again I remind you that noise existed when a/c was not on! )
will try to uninstall its' clutch during the following days.

Great info on here, I went to Florida for Christmas, and after arriving my car started making the death of an engine noise, after trouble shooting I did determine that it was the ac compressor, I used the duralast 431k6 belt for the power steering and alternator, great advice who ever suggested that, I know the compressor is a sealed unit, and everyone is saying the clutch and pulley cannot be replaced without replacing the entire compressor, I feel like everything can be rebuilt, has anyone had any luck trying to take the compressor apart and replacing the bearing/clutch? Or is it just impossible?

My AC compressor is making noise, so in mean time I was trying to get car drivable. I just picked up this belt and it is way too tight, tensioner pulled back as far as it can go and still doesn't fit for me. I need probably another 1/4-1/2 inch. Is it something I'm doing wrong, or is a new belt just tight.

Maybe I should try the 6PK 1660 belt.

Any suggestion or tip would help.
