What Is Behind this?

I realize that unlike the G87 the G42 does not have a radiator exposure issue. Having said that, what exactly is behind the two front side grilles and do they need protection? Thanks.

Remote radiators? If you have M technology paket then you have it mounted on both sides for better cooling when driven hard

Thank you. Thats the setup I have. The question is whether it is advisable to protect them with some type of covering.

It would be good to have a grill covering it. I know there is some company that makes them but can’t remember who.

If you want to get really worried take a look under the front of the car and see the radiator that is completely exposed.

You might be thinking of ZunSport. Fortunately, my configuration does not have the exposed radiator under the front.

Turner Motorsport Skid Plate for Oil Cooler Radiator

Turner Motorsport sells a skid plate (which has been discussed in other threads here) that does a lot to protect the under-body oil cooler, but it still leaves 4 fairly large areas of exposure. I recall that at least one person solved this problem by installing heavy screening over the 4 exposed areas. This combination of the skid plate and the heavy screening looks like the best solution to the possibility of catastrophic engine oil loss.

I saw this oil cooler on my car when it was up on a lift for its first oil/filter change at 1200 miles. The oil cooler's exposure is definitely a significant risk that is just waiting for an accident to happen. I plan to do something about this soon, along with installing the Zun Sport grilles.

Any (minimally) diminished airflow from these ZunSport mesh screens is negligible and has no significant effect on cooling or the risk for overheating.

And just for completeness: in the 230i the triangles are just blanked off (and excellent for catching insects). I'm slightly tempted to get the aftermarket grills just to make them look more sensible.

UK model ZTK cooling radiators. No they don’t need any protection.

I think the Mexicans deliberately put the extra cooling radiator for US cars exposed under their cars just to cheer them up.

These from Zunsport do stop the leaves from getting in, but i like how they look first and foremost

My EU ZTK has no cooler exposed to the bottom.

I wonder what the rear muffler looks like, the car had 25km on it and it looked scuffed or even dented. I found this out when changing to winter tires.
